(Our Lord promised Saint Gertrude to release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time this prayer is recited).
Think of all those poor souls who have no one to pray for them: the destitute, the forgotten, the marginal, the prostitutes, the drug addicts, the hopeless alcoholics, the ones who are so horribly neglected by their own families. Jesus, mercy! Have compassion on those souls for whom no one prays! They are the very "little ones" that the world forgets and the rich and the proud ignore. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for them!

My mother used to sing an old hymn which contained the lines:
