Always the patriot, and out of respect for President Obama I hope to honor his designation of June as Gay Pride month by posting about good Catholics who left behind the homosexual lifestyle for the sake of the Gospel, heeding Christ's call to "reform your lives, the kingdom of God is at hand!" Motivated by divine love, these men obeyed the call to "'Come out from among them and separate yourselves from them'... 'I will welcome you and be a father to you and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty". - 2 Cor 6: 17-18. Of course that is not an easy thing to do and requires great grace - but there are holy men and women who have come through the struggle and who are intercessors and models, thus, "since we have these promises, beloved, let us purify ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, and in fear of God strive to fulfill our consecration perfectly." - 2 Cor 7:1
Pier Vittorio redux....
The controversial Italian homosexual writer, who died in 1991 due to complications of AIDS, had been reconciled with the Church before he finally succumbed to the disease. He died a Catholic. I mention Tondelli today, as a sort of patron saint for those who struggle with the issues of homosexuality and Catholic teaching.
.
“Tondelli was fascinated with the works of Jewish mysticism, the Imitation of Christ, and the mystics like St. Teresa of Avila. “I love to look through them, to find and read stories, and the idea of holiness,” he wrote..
In 1989, the Italian writer said, “Everyone that has been raised in the bosom of a religion has his own religiosity. I have always tried to seek out not so much a discussion about the Catholic faith, but rather to express my own religiosity—without a doubt in the bosom of Christianity—which seeks out or questions its own positions, especially in confrontation with other authors.”
.
Speaking about chastity after his conversion, Tondelli called it “a mystic virtue for those who have chosen it and perhaps the most superhuman use of sexuality.”” - Catholic News Agency
.
My reflections…

I also find it interesting Pier Vittorio enjoyed reading the mystics before his conversion. Many saints read the lives and writings of the saints before their own conversions, - two that come to mind immediately, Ignatius of Loyola and Edith Stein - what they read led them to the truth.

ReplyDeleteWe need to hear more about this.
I spoke with a young man that contracted aids, and he told me his Doctor had pronounced a death sentence upon him because of the advanced state of the disease.
ReplyDeleteI know some of the people that were praying for him. They stormed Heaven on his behalf unbeknownst to him. They did penance and fought the evil that had overcome this young man through aids.
God hears the prayers of the Church and her Faithful.
Now, several years later, there is no sign of aids, and the Faithful very quietly and with much Charity took him to Confession and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Blessed be God in all His Angels and all His Saints.

I have a friend named Bruce who is unapologetically gay and, back in the day, was my partner in crime. You either love Bruce or hate him. His raucous laugh, wicked sense of humor, and unique style (always dripping in gold & diamond rings, necklaces, etc) has endeared him to many. He's one of a kind. After 20 years of being HIV positive, he's calling it quits & giving up on all treatment. He has survived Cancer twice, DVTs, you name it. He just can't continue the struggle. In early April, we entered him in hospice. Please remember Bruce in your prayers. I'm hoping this may be t h e occasion for his repentance and conversion. Thanks much.
ReplyDeleteTerry: I just love you. Leave it to you to see the greater good, the highter calling...I too love the description of chasity as a mystic virtue. St Ignatius showed me the way home, as it were. And, I Catholic by birth... The Saints are still some of my very best friends. The Saints comprise peerless marketing for Catholicism. Sometimes, I think a return to reverence for the simple things could lead many back--Daily Mass, the Eucharist, Confession. Receiving the Eucharist on a daily basis re-made my heart. Conversion is so possible for all of us...
ReplyDeleteDear Doughboy,
ReplyDeleteI am waiting for Mass to start..
I will petition Heaven on his behalf.
I will ask the Saints to intervene.
God bless you for your Charity towards your friend; caring for someone's soul is truly an act of Charity.

DB - I'll ppray for Bruce at adoration today - see - you are his connection - your love and presence brings - demonstrates the love burning in the Heart of Jesus for him. Try to pray the chaplet of Divine Mercy for him - I will too. One by one we love one another and carry one another's burdens - carrying our brother to heaven. God bless Bruce.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maria - God always provides a way out, so that we may be able to bear our cross. (1 Cor 10:13)
ReplyDeleteTo the screams of both the "traddies" and the "progressives"...from my experience, as a religious and a priest...
ReplyDeletemany of those who struggle with same sex attraction are wounded, looking for God, want what the Catholic Church offers them, even if it is YEARS of excruciating prayer, penance, going back and forth, obsessive/compulsive kinds of sins with porn, anonymous sex, friendship sex, torture with addiction to alcohol and drugs, etc....
these men and women need our compassion and help...not "sermons"...but compassion, love and sometimes "tough love"; our sex saturated society and especially the ya-hoos within the Church that give them permission to sin do no good...uh, huuh...they need Jesus, they need love, they need direction, and sometimes a good swift kick...but always in love.
This whole thing about "gay love" is just crap...these folks need Jesus...in His Sacrament of Penance, in His Eucharistic Heart, in the love of the brethren. Period.
(I am now a "black-preacher", available at any gatherings that might appreciate my message
:<)!...Sorry, Terry...some African-American woman preacher "possessed" me just now (don't know who it is...but SHE good!:<)!
LOL! Quite alright Father.
