Today is the feast of St. Benedict ...
We read that monks should not drink wine at all, but since the monks of our day cannot be convinced of this, let us at least agree to drink moderately, and not to the point of excess, for wine makes even wise men go astray (Sir 19:2). - Rule Chapter 40

I wonder how many of the faithful appreciate the importance of St Benedict in the survival of Western Civilization? The monastery as an idea and organization saved the Christian world when it was about to go under. The monastery became a place of learning, culture, industry, art and architecture. It was the forerunner of the university.not to mention worship and praise of God. Thank you St Benedict.
