ReplyDeleteI read that as Melinda wanting to help, feeling tremendous compassion and concern, but forgetting that pain and suffering have been reality since the Fall, and will continue to be reality until the end of time. She often seems to want us - The Church - to say to those who are suffering, "Suffer not! You are okay!" But that is not the message of Christ, which is more akin to "Suffer well! You are loved!"
ReplyDeleteI'm not infallible. But in my readings and study of Blessed John Henry Newman and doctrinal development, I cannot see one here with regard to "keeping the dignity of male and female while allowing for some sort of recognition of transgender". The male-female ordered sexuality is developed and has reached, likely, a zenith (again, fallible me). NFP was probably the last great development of that doctrine.
As for same sex attraction and transgender issues, I find (fallible me) these to be more comfortably categorized as sexual and psychiatric suffering, rather than true expressions of human sexuality. Melinda may agree with that as well, but our answer to it is different. We share compassion and love for these individuals, but my compassion and love is in my outreach, prayer, and shared suffering. Hers seems to go beyond that and into the realm of changing doctrine to ease suffering.
Our Lord suffered. Martyrs suffered...and still do (horrifically in the Middle East and on a much greater scale than a wealthy-educated-comfortable-by-comparison western men and women who have same sex attraction and transgender issues.)
I guess Melinda and I do not share first principles on the reality of suffering from a Christian point of view.
Yep. It's ultimately a lack of faith in God's providence and in His whole plan of salvation. Her whole impetus (shared by many others) is that such and such people are suffering--may do even worse things (suicide, leave the Church) if we don't give them something more they yearn for--and so we must break from past norms and principles to help them. Again, as I mentioned below, there is an utter lack of faith in God's grace and providence here, and also a naive understanding of the sources (often the world, the flesh and the devil) of the "legitimate" or "authentic" feelings and aspirations of the wounded.
DeleteFinally, there's also a hidden pride that often lurks in these situations. "We must do something to solve the problem, I must do something to solve the suffering." Christian humility is doing your small part and letting God be God.
Have to agree with Nan on this one. She always gives short-shrift to the influence of grace, personal sin and the demonic, but that's where all the action is--at least according to all the saints and doctors of the Church. She'd rather focus on sociological, psychological and other "naturalistic" phenomena.
ReplyDeleteShe's also another one of today's pundits who baldly rejects the prescriptions of Apostolic Christianity (the norms found in Acts of the Apostles and the various Letters). Such as what do you do when you have visible unrepentant grave sinners who are causing scandal and weakening the faith of many around them? You pretend like they're not in mortal sin and act like everything is ok. Gee, that's really worked for the last fifty years--never mind that it directly contradicts the apostles. Sorry to vent, but I'm tired of prelates and pundits who think they know better than Peter, Paul, James, John and nearly 2000 years of the lived faith.

DeleteIt seems to me there is gnostic strain at work in gender ideology - a sort of crypto-Catharism. It might be described more at 'spiritual - not religious' - which is why I tend to equate the multifaceted aspect of gender/identity with the Otherkin/Therian type movements. One gets the distinct impression from many of the discussions that it is a cocktail of neo-pagan/Theosophical/Hindu syncreticism. One needs to peel back the layers of language and dissimulation to expose the root of the phenomenon.

You have mentioned the gnostic and the spiritual, but what about the legal? What is the nature of the "legal world"? Where is it? What does it look like?
DeleteThe legal world is a non-physical world, and the ideology named Gender is a purely legal concept. The rest is smoke and mirrors.
Gender denies us legal recognition of the physical reality of our body, and instead governs us as though we were mere states of mind. That's why the State is giving people (legal) permission to do things they cannot (physically) do.
The problem is that, here in (physical) reality, we still have a body. Gender turns our God-given body into a legal liability. That's how demonic Gender is.
