The same way that there are "Extremist Christians" like the WBS when given a chance would kill for the name of Christ, and Extremist Liberation Theology adherents...there are also Extremist Muslims.
ReplyDeleteI am not defending the horrendous acts of these terrorists groups, but it takes you to live side by side with Muslims in a Muslim country for 10-20 years to understand our common ground as children of the Abrahamic Faith.
I do not condone the heresies and errors in their teaching, but at the same time we cannot generalize the whole "Religion" in itself and in effect condemn those who practice in faithfully and lovingly.
Heck, I would even go as far as saying that I know a LOT of Muslims who are more Christ-like than Christians...
Don't buy into this Western Mainstream Media crap they feed you, sure these things exist but they exist within the "Extreme" section of their religion, it is "Extreme" not the Norm. I lived among these people Terry, I lived among Muslims for a very long time and I had admired their way of belief and holiness on certain things, indeed they are close to Christ...they just don't know it yet. Pray for Muslims...that they may see the light in the fullness of Christ and in His Church
I do pray for them - thanks for your thoughtful response. The photo I chose is of a Syrian rebel - I think - ISIS crucifies their own followers for not being ruthless enough. It is going beyond extreme. The terrorists are a dangerous threat to civilization - not just Christians.

The gracious Mark Shea always sheds the light on the lies spread by others. I stand with what the Catholic Church teaches regarding Muslims in the CCC. Papa Francis is a prayerful and very wise and learned man, he may speak off the cuff but in matters such as these,
I trust he speaks what the Church teaches and believes as he has been given the faith and the authority to do so by Christ Himself in line with all of the successors of St. Peter.
Let's keep praying for all of God's people...believers and non-believers.

I am giving Pope Francis the benefit of doubt here since he personally knows Muslims, for many years now, especially when he was in Argentina and is aware of their good will and lifestyle. One of his best friends is a Muslim who as you may know, accompanied him and Rabbi Skorka to the Holy Land.
DeleteI am willing to say that Papa Francis may have had in mind his many Muslims contacts who live a good life, who promote and want peace, who work side by side with others to promote charity among all.
I have read stories of Muslims in the war torn areas coming to the aid of Christians, giving them shelter, defending their homes, protecting the Churches.
So when I think of the many who are of good will, I pray for them to take a stand. I pray that we all be united against the tide that is coming if we fail; to pray for peace.
So just like it is among us Christians...Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, I am sure seeing that many among the Muslim community have different interpretations of their Koran.
Makes sense to me.
But the example of individual Muslims does not define the essence of the religion ("authentic Islam"). The same principle holds for any religion.
DeleteI do not need to speculate about what Pope Francis "had in mind" because he specifically made a claim in reference to the very essence of Islam and the book on which it is based. That is the argument. For me, for instance, to cite Catholics of "good will" as evidence of the truth of Christ's resurrection from the dead would not do.
I think that Catholics, including the Pope, who try to define Islam as a peaceful religion are not facing reality. There is a problem with the nature of Islam itself, because the Koran teaches its people that their duty is to commit violence against non-Muslims. This is why there was a 1,000 year war waged by Islamic armies world-wide between 600 and 1700 AD. Those Muslims who are peaceful are literally ignoring the parts of the Koran that call for violence against non-Muslims.

The Koran is an engine of violence. This explains why the 2010 Pew Study shows that half of the Muslim people around the world believe in violent Islam. There are 1.6 Billion Muslims - Pew showed that 70% of these believe in Sharia, and 65% of these numbers believe in "deadly Sharia" (e.g., stoning for adultery, death for Muslims who convert). So that makes 46%, or 738 Million Muslims who believe in deadly Sharia.
