LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Oarfish are denizens of the deep and are rarely seen at the surface, or on the beach. However, within the past few weeks, two oarfish have washed up on California shores.I just watched BBC news and a scientists said there is no scientific proof of that...
In Japan, there is a traditional correlation between oarfish and earthquakes that dates back for centuries. Traditional Japanese folklore says that oarfish beach themselves as a warning to the people before an earthquake. The normally elusive fish, which can be up to five meters in length, are said to be messengers from the palace of the Sea God.
Although scientists have not properly studied the matter, there does appear to be an anecdotal correlation between oarfish sightings and major earthquakes. Most recently, in the year before the massive March 11, 2011 earthquake in Fukushima Prefecture that took some 18,000 lives, Japanese fishermen reported a rash of oarfish sightings. These reports were made as early as March, 2010, following a major 8.8 quake in Chile. - Catholic Online
If California falls into the ocean in the next year, nobody will ever convince me that the oarfish didn't pull it in.

I was thinking the same thing...I could get hit walking into a 7-Eleven...who knows? I live in So. California...I ain't gonna worry about the "Big One" since l have been hearing about it for as long as I can remember. Have been through a few big ones already but not of a magnitude of 8 on the ol' Richter scale. ^^

I love Japanese food and since I am in So. Cal. and we have a wonderful thriving long time Japanese community, well, I thought "sushi" when looking at the oarfish and just wondered...

ReplyDeleteFor a minute there, I thought I had accidentally wandered onto my favourite Conspiracy Theory blog, whose owner is convinced that underwater volcanoes are killing sea life while the climate change contingent continue to blame greenhouse gases. He would be all over this story as more evidence of this theory.
Then it hit me that Abbey-Roads should be my favourite Conspiracy Theory blog.

Well, that's just like the BBC, innit? They don't believe in any kind of God!
I am actually watching an anime series right now that takes place in present day Japan with folks living underneath the sea and are called Sea-Dwellers (duh). They worship a Sea God who gifted them with a special second skin which allows them to dwell under the sea...the skin is called Ena. They have a shrine they built to their sea god.
DeleteAnyway, I had a laugh when Terry mentioned the oarfish as "messengers of the sea god."
On a more serious note, as we go about our day/night, we forget many times just who it is who is the author of life, eh? He does have to "shake things up" a bit to gently remind us.
