Prelates on vacation...

L’Age D’Or - Luis Buñuel (1930)

News travels fast.

I first saw it on Deacon's Bench - about the Cardinal in Hawaii.  Don't know the story?  A retired Cardinal on vacation in Hawaii was arrested for DUI.  He apologized.  It's all over Catholic news and a few blogs.  A couple of snarky innuendos caught my eye - but it's better not to laugh about such things, or point fingers.  Catholics like to drink.

I wonder how these stories concern us?  Why they concern us?

Even reputable bloggers rush to print the stories.

Other bloggers speculate on the Cardinal's private life.

It's creepy.

What?

  1. As I get older I feel a lot more sympathy for Bishop Guido from Brother Sun Sister Moon. I'm sure more like him than St. Francis. I never thought that could have happened 30 years ago!

  2. I think the vast hypocrisy overload we have all been subject to for oh-so-long in the behavior of priests and nuns has bred a very, very sharp and quick Reaction to any old little thing like this. As a kid, when some priest or other ended up in AA, well, he is just like the rest of us, makes mistakes and human, and now he will be even better able to minister to those in need.....now.....with the gay priests, the essentially non-Catholic nuns, the kid accosting priests, on and on.....any little thing takes on a big, big backlash. sorry but I think this is true. we are reaping more and more......and Catholics are sure being watched & scrutinized and so I just wonder: Why - don't these religious Know that ? I feel really frustrated.

    1. ...no I don;t mean 'the kids are accosting the priests' (not yet....bet a lot of abused kids wish they could have fought back ) of course I mean those priests who accosted kids, just little kids - grieves my heart.

  3. "Other bloggers speculate on the Cardinal's private life"

Not only bloggers but commentators. Some of the stuff I read on the Huff Post was well, scandalous. They even brought one of his successors DUI arrest prior to taking over San Francisco. Not surprised there.
Anyway, it must have been a slow news day.

It seems this type of news will just continue as long as the Church continues to be gossip fodder due to some of her sons/daughters so-called misbehaviors.

  4. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. Judge not lest ye be judged. Specks vs. beams in eyes. I could go on. The cardinal's first mistake was going on vacation with other priests.

  5. No need to defend the Cardinal - he said he made an error in judgement - he's on vacation and thought he was fine to drive. He was stopped and nothing bad happened. It's unfortunate but surely people can't be scandalized. I wouldn't have posted but it was all over the net and people were saying ugly things, as Yaya pointed out. Thank God no one was hurt.

  6. It would have made a better story if he would have fled officers or blathered racial slur. Bloggers love that stuff.

    What?

    1. I know - like Mel Gibson. If he was naked would be a good story too.

      I went too far, didn't I.

      Gosh!

    2. He should have followed Reese Witherspoon's example and asked when he was asked to walk a straight line, "don't you know who I am?" I think she resisted arrest too but then again I may be wrong.

I cannot imagine the kind Cardinal doing such a thing ... then we really would be gossip fodder. ;p
