"Are we prepared to promote conditions in which the living contact with God can be reestablished? For our lives today have become godless to the point of complete vacuity. God is no longer with us in the conscious sense of the word. He is denied, ignored, excluded from every claim to have a part in our daily life." - Alfred Delp, S.J.

The Temptation in the Desert

Such a mystery.

How did the devil appear?  In art he is most often shown as a fallen angel.  I always imagine him to have been more deceitfully seductive, or that he would feign holiness and goodness.  Which is why I prefer representations such as the Juan de Flandes example shown here.

  1. I was just thinking the same thing. He is most effective when he appears or works through those who are thought to express the voice of conscience. With that in mind, priests and prelates have been given an awesome responsibility in the care of souls.
