I wish.
As a sign-symbol it worked better than all the felt banners, dried branches and rocks, and rough hewen crosses the Liturgical Environment Team could throw at us. In some churches with really bad modern statues and art, covering them would be an act of mercy. Just saying.
Something more to offer up.
LOL. I always liked Holy Week. As an altar boy it was fun to go around and cover up all the saints and holy things. It was like they were being taken away from us. Now I know they were. I was best with the censor. Stoked that charcoal till it was one hot stone. Furnerals were my favorite. Got out of school to start a fire and see how much smoke I could produce. Sounds crazy now but being an altar boy had its perks.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fun memory.
DeleteI find it profoundly sad to see the statues covered (like today at church.) It's near impossible to worship a covered statue (okay - I'm being snarky)
ReplyDeleteHaha! I love the custom.
DeleteWhen I was little I didn't understand what the covered statues meant, but I think I instinctually perceived that something very holy was going on.
ReplyDeleteThe sisters told us it represented how Jesus was hidden when he went up to Jerusalem.
