Refusing Communion to Boy Scouts?

Our Lady of Hermits

Evidently a priest wrote a post saying such a thing...

I would not administer Holy Communion to any Boy Scout coming up in uniform. They are now just as bad as the Rainbow Sash crowd and all other militant homosexualists. They would have to renounce their membership first and not wear their uniforms. - Source

The post is down now.

Kind of nuts?

Oh yeah!

People say the darndest things online.  Frequently our emotions get the best of us and we post.  Sometimes we've been alone with our thoughts way too long and we think we have something to say.  I know!  That's a description of me and my blog.  God have mercy.

That said, I doubt I will ever understand how hermits can claim to be living an eremetical life while watching and commenting and actively participating in religious and secular life online?  Those who claim to be hermits in our day, and I don't care how many theological degrees they have,  must more than ever be careful of self-deception - and/or - what the Orthodox call spiritual deception [prelest].  Every Christian must be vigilant - but it is especially dangerous for ascetics and idiorrhythmic religious, or self-styled contemplatives.

No communion for you!

  1. It makes more sense for a priest to tell the scouts they may no longer meet in the church hall. I know the new policy is not in conflict with Church teaching, but I agree with the priest in Washington State who is banning the scouts from his parish. He is being targeted big time. But his letter explaining his decision is very articulate and reasoned. http://www.starofthesea.net/index.php/our-parish/blog/626-fr-lappes-response-to-new-boy-scouts

We need more priests like Fr. Lappe!

  2. You are right, it does make more sense to end the parish relationship/sponsorship of the Scouts.

  3. Hmm, not really. As Mary Ann points out, the new policy is not in conflict with Church teachings and if the Church doesn't kick someone out because they are gay, why should the scouts? The scout policy just says they aren't going to "banish," someone for how they identify, says nothing about promoting or supporting it. My thought is, if you are old enough to have a sexual identity, aren't you too old to be in scouts...( I stopped scouts in the 5th grade when I got involved with sports...do they have scouts in high school?)

  4. Yes; the ultimate rank to attain is Eagle Scout. It is incredibly difficult, and it usually takes several years until one is at least 18 years old.

    1. Was Corky Romano an Eagle Scout - or is that a different uniform?

  5. I was a Cub Scout but had to drop out after my dad stole the proceeds from my popcorn ball sales.

  6. Terry, that was a joke right???? I hope so but sometimes your humor is very "dry," (which is a good thing...)

Speaking of, love the Corky Romano gif!

    1. You mean my Cub Scout remark? No that was true - although I think I can laugh about it now. My dad was rather dishonest.
