I don't know why it is but every time Fr. Z schedules a blognic in NYC I imagine it to be quite like something out of Mapp and Lucia and company. I wonder who could play Georgino?

I imagine the conversation centering around such important matters as the length of a cappa and the number of jewels embedded in a papal tiara. Jumping to the horrid heretics who do not appreciate the finer details of liturgical furnishings - lace and watered silk and the like. And of course the countless boasts of how many followers one has on one's blog, Facebook, or Twitter, as well as the count of hits per hour one receives... stats, stats, status! Waving iphones and ipads and blackberries about like girls showing off engagement rings. The room abuzz - Vatican whispers in the pub, as it were - SNAPping at the LCWR crones, dissecting what the rebuke of cardinals really says. Slavishly accurate appraisals of the Episcopate, and so on. Such fun!

I'll bring my guitar and we could sing "Day by Day."
I'll even wear my "Sister Sara" pantsuit accompanied with my cross and American flag lapel pin and the lovely gold cross necklace my dearly departed Grama gave me years ago.... (the inside joke to this outfit is that when I attended Daily Mass at Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas last autumn for an engineering conference, this was my "professional" appearance....and I must have had at least 100 people over a span of 4 days ask me what religious order I belonged to.. :)

I've never been to one but I imagine it's probably like Z-Chat. A lot of nice (some wacky) Catholics having a good time, laughing, listening to music (but with the addition of alcohol consumption.. actually, I think alcohol is often involved in Z-Chat too.)

What is a blognic?
ReplyDeletePatrick, as he has with so many other internet taglines, Fr. Z invented the term. It seems to be based on picnic - as I understand it, it is a gathering of bloggers and followers who assemble at some pre-designated place - preferably where food and alcohol are served - and they socialize and admire one another. It is like a blog picnic; planned, yet informal; prearranged yet impromtu - since anyone may drop by, hence the term blog-nic.

Why not just meet people with common interests and views, chat, meet people in person you've only "met" online, giving faces to the names...why is that a bad thing? Perhaps it is a way to combat the anonymity of the internet and the disregard for personal feelings (since the "name" on tne screen doesn't seem much like a person) as one engages in online discussions?
I agree there is a certain amount of self-regard, but I also think there is a sincere desire for community, friendship and good conversation. What's wrong with that?

John - nothing is wrong with that - I'm just treating it lightly - being silly. If I was in NYC I would certainly show up.
ReplyDeleteIn the mid '80s, before the Internet, there were Bulletins Boards you could dial up and leave messages/commentary.. I went to a couple of gatherings based around the users of these Bulletin Boards--it was pretty fun--usually a picnic in a park, usually BYOF/D, but it was fun finally putting a name to a face. And eventhough there was usually and extremen age difference--anywhere from teenagers to silver foxes, we all pretty much got along...

ReplyDeleteWe could arrange an "English tea" blognic here in CF...it's half-way between the Cities and Fr.Z's digs...English tea, finger sandwiches, (a little sherry,ooo!), crumpets, scones and of course, cake.
He's not too far from us...you, CoA, Ray, Swissmiss, Adoro, and whomever...it could be fun, yeah?:<)!
