Dana Scallon

Dana and friends.
.
Dana was on EWTN Live last evening, speaking about her new show on the network, as well as her new rosary recording dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. I think Dana is a wonderful woman, very talented, and an excellent Catholic witness and worker for pro-life issues - my goodness, she has been a member of the European Parliament. I'm just not a fan of her music style - especially in liturgical situations.
.
Her new show will host a variety of singers and musicians - sort of like a religious variety show - from music ministries throughout the United States, with an emphasis upon good liturgical music I guess. I'm not fond of contemporary liturgical music, music ministries, or any performance up front and center at Mass. No piano bar players, jazz ensembles, stringed quartets - none of that for me. That said, I'm afraid Dana's new show will be an attempt to demonstrate how to do all of this right.
.
How insipidly Protestant.
.
Angela is back from her National Lampoon family vacation and mentioned that the music ministry in the church they attended for Mass last Sunday performed the Gloria to the tune of Eidelwiess. I know! Schmaltz-o-rama!

  1. Another thing we have in common, Terry me boy!

I've been a big fan of hers for a long time for the reasons you mention. I also saw her at the October Rosary Procession at the State Capitol a couple of years OK. She served as one of the MCs and gave out prizes for original music in a contest open to children from around the world. She has tremendous stage presence. And she's a tiny lady.

I tuned in the show a few minutes late last night, but I thought I heard her say in talking about one of her planned guests (who was in the audience, I think), that folks who started lay apostolates would be featured on the program.

After all, she has had an EWTN program for years that showcased Catholic groups performing modern Catholic music. I don't much care for that, either.

I gotta believe this new show has more than you think. EWTN doesn't make too many mistakes.

  2. Ray - don't get me wrong - I'm not a fan. She's nice though, I'm sure.

I dislike Irish singers - although I was a fan of Sinead O'Connor and a few others... so that isn't exactly true. I think it's Irish music like Dana's that I dislike so much.

I saw the program too, and it changed my perception of her. I have never liked her music either. But, her, as a person, she is obviously a very good and holy woman. God bless her.
