As a kid growing up on a farm in tornado alley, this film was the stuff of nightmares. I watched it on tv as an adult, and they had edited out most of the truly scary parts--the nasty talking apple trees and a lot of the tornado footage, but I still found it macabre fare for children. "How about a little fire, Scarecrow?" Geez Louise...
THIS is how a kids movie should be made...dark and scary..the book is darker as there are a whole lot of things in Oz ready to harm Dorothy. Cut out the trees..sacrilege!
Margaret Hamilton owns both the bad ass witch role and self righteous petty mean old lady roles.
I still remember the first time I saw this movie at the age of 8. I still LOVE it today! Bring on the flying monkeys and talking trees! We need to see the difference between good and evil!
I don't - and I used to watch Mr. Rogers on occasion as an adult. I think I may have seen her interviewed on Cavett or another such talk show. She was nice.
She brought her witch hat to the show, and Mr Rogers asked to try it on.I was sitting on the couch with my home day care kids, and I almost blurted out, "Don't do it, Mr Rogers!"

ReplyDeleteHaha! I know. I've often wondered about Glinda the Good Fairy appearing in a sphere of light - it was how Our Lady approached the children at Fatima.
