The habits are very much like those of the Sisters of St. Joseph, an order responsible for some of the misery of my years from seventh through twelfth grade. In those days, Sister did not need to know karate. She accomplished as much with humiliation.
Viv used to slap me with the end of her pointer and hit harder if you put your hands up to protect your face. I think she was a little Jansenistic. She could twist and ear so tight it almost brought you to your knees - although you were already on them because she did it at Mass. She hated me - I have no doubt. She knew about my parents and that I was a bastard - seriously. She was mean to the good kids too though - except for one girl who wanted to enter the convent.
I'm just like Philomena though - I hold no grudge. What?
