The Amish

And shunning.

I watched the PBS American Experience episodes on the Amish and shunning.

Many of my readers know about shunning ...

Don't we.

  1. Just tonight I shunned a second helping of brisket and dessert. You'll never get anywhere on a diet without shunning...

  2. I missed the beginning so I didn't have a clear picture of why some of them left or were told to leave. And all the discussion about going to hell. Wow

  3. One of them was told to leave as she just wanted to...learn to read of all things (imagine the nerve) All I could think of was...how can any parent shun their kid? You don't agree with everything your kids do but you stay on their ass and bitch at em...like a good parent should...(believe me..I would have loved having my p's shun me...but no, they kept giving me their opinions..over and over and over...) And then they go on and on about hell...uh, I think your working your way there by cutting off your own kid.

And was it just me or did a LOT of them look inbred? I mean, if there is only a few selections to choose from in your cut off world...it makes sense.

However, that one guy who kept leaving seven times..but jumped ship to that Christian Church which told them it was so easy to be "saved," just accept Christ..uh, its a bit harder then that...so I kind of agreed with the Amish on that one.

  4. Sure do.

Some of the stricter Mormon cults practice shunning, as does Scientology (which, yes, I know, is a totally ridiculous caricature of a religion or cult or whatever, but for the kids raised in that bizzaro world and who leave or whose families are torn apart by one parent leaving and the other staying, it's the same thing).

Too many people are more familiar with the Amish-as-tourist-attraction or the shooting tragedy, but there's a lot of ugliness inside that community -- inside any closed, secretive community. Plus, the inbreeding issues.

I was always fond of the Amish drug dealer story, though. Restores my faith in the universe, in an odd sort of way.

  5. And close the comments, nice.

    "Analogous" doesn't mean "equivalent."

The first definition I could find online of analogous was: "Similarity in some respects between things that are otherwise dissimilar."

    1. Sorry - I didn't mean to be rude, but I wasn't interested in how the volley back and forth was going. If you are interested, there is always tomorrow's post to dispute.
