2014 is the 100 anniversary of the beginning of this terrible war. In France we are starting today many celebrations which will last for the next 4 years. Good to remember this tragedy. I fondly remember the children's processions with homemade paper lanterns accompanied by a man on horseback dressed like St Martin when I lived in Germany. Happy st Martin day
The crucifix pictured is The Return Crucifix. This is from Holy Innocents Church in Manhattan.
" The cross in the northwest corner of the church is called the "Return Crucifix" because a soldier, seeking a return to faith, stopped here to say a prayer before he went off to fight in World War I. After the war, he entered a monastery in France. Ever since, this cross has been the object of devotion for people all over the world."

BTW, one more comment. There are persistent rumors of Holy Innocents being shut down. This would be tragic. It is an oasis of peace in the heart of midtown Manhattan and the Garment District, with Adoration all afternoon and Masses throughout the day. It also has the only daily TLM in the entire tri state area. Father Z usually says Mass here when he is in town, as he did just a couple of weeks ago. There is currently no actual pastor, but the administrator is Father George Rutler, who pastors St. Michael's Church a few blocks away.

I would often stop into make a visit in this church when I lived in NYC.
