I studied under one of the world experts on psychological eating disorders in Dublin ; and heard something I still find very hard to believe. In an almost whisper she confessed that anorexics will ultimately die of anorexia - even decades after treatment and an ostensibly ongoing healthy lifestyle - because it is incurable ; and the person becomes hardwired. It's like a severe form of alcoholism which can't be defeated by an act of will ; only delayed. It's one of the things the experts never say when talking to the media - because it's something that's better left unsaid.
