PSA: 7 signs people dislike you ...*

1. The way they look at you

2. Always blamed

3. Gossip

4. You are left out

5. Last man out

6.Things are accidentally broken

7. People stare

*Although you may think you are making a great first impression, or if you have met with someone on numerous occasions, and are trying to appeal to them, there are a number of things you can spot in their behavior, and the way they respond to you, which will let you know they do not like you. Although many signs are quite obvious, there are also less subtle signs that people give off, if they are not really a fan of you, or do not get along with you too well. These are some signs to look out for, which you will notice when people are uncomfortable around you, or simply do not like you for one reason or the other. - Finish reading here.

Yes Toonces, Poodles go to heaven too - but only if they're good.

The Pope didn't say that - but he could have.

He didn't say cats go to hell either.  That is so not funny.  Think of the St. Bernard Alpine Rescue Cats.  And don't forget - there are Dominicans* in heaven - some are canonized saints.

Alpine Rescue Cat.

Will there be animals in heaven?  If you want them there, of course.  Even Fr. James Martin, SJ agrees.  (Fr. Martin is kind of a poodle himself.)

That said, everything we need will be found in God - all our desires will be met.  Our Lord has promised a new heaven and new earth - all creation is renewed - nothing will be lacking in God.  Why is that so hard to get?  Why do people torment themselves with these questions?  Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all of these things will be added to you.

A more pertinent question may well be:  "Do catty people go to heaven?"

What about Pitbulls?

*Dominicans - aka God's dogs.

What?

This just in: Saps at Sea Retreat

So it is true.  The Voris/Fr. Z retreat at sea I mean.

Remember a few years back when Fr. Z was writing about cruise line chaplains and other forms of employment?  Or was it about Celebrity Cruises excluding priests as chaplains?

I'm just saying.

Signed,

Zagano - gimme a call.  Haha!  Just kidding!

Thursday Morning Update:  Looks as if I'm not the only one who thinks the retreat is strange.**  Read it here - Catholic In Brooklyn.  (Excellent blog BTW - never heard of the blog until today.)

**This is what I find strange about the 'Retreat':
  • The "retreat" is on a luxury cruise ship amidst hundreds of vacationers - during Lent.
  • It is promoted as a Year of Faith retreat sponsored by a lay organization of Catholics - it is not even an official Church sponsored retreat as far as I know.
  • It is such an unwise move for Fr. Z it is not funny - not good for the resume.  I think it safe to say Voris is pretty much a persona non grata with many bishops, dioceses, not to mention the USCCB.

Thursday Night Update:  Man With the Black Hat commentary.

Friday Morning Update:  Crescat has a post on the retreat as well - bonus feature: Church Militant Video Promo - check it out on "We've Officially Jumped the Shark".

Polish priest and the rite of initiation for children....

... I found this in my spam box, sent to me by my friend Thom.

It is one in a series of photos showing school kids licking whipped cream off the knees of the parish priest/headmaster of the school.

The images - which are apparently part of an 'initiation ceremony' at Salesians High School in Lubin, southern Poland - show both male and female 13-year old pupils taking part in the bizarre practice.

Father Marcin Kozyra, who is also the school's principal, has defended his actions by saying such ceremonies for first year pupils have been an annual event for many years. - Read more here.

I wonder what Paris Hilton would say?  I read somewhere she is Catholic and something of a moralist lately.  Don't let Novus Ordo watch see these photos.

I guess Brad Pitt threw his mother under the bus.

Or why should I care what celebrities think and say?

Why do we care?  What does it matter?  As Hurricane Isaac approached, Ellen Barkin quipped, “C’mon #Isaac! Wash every pro-life, anti-education, anti-woman, xenophobic, gay-bashing, racist SOB right into the ocean! #RNC"  So?

Brad Pitt supports gay marriage.  Yeah?  His mother doesn't.  So?  Jolie's dad supports Brad's mom.  So?  Angelina and Brad once said they wouldn't get married until everyone who wants to get married can do so.  That worked, huh?  No one is under that bus BTW.

Futhermore.  I once said if you allow gays to get married then everyone is gonna want to do it.  I said it first, Elizabeth...

Which reminds me, The Anchoress claims she did.  Kind of.  Then she tries to credit/pump stats for Fr. Longenecker with the Hollywood director story about how men and goats should be able to get married.  Of course Mark Shea is credited with the Cassavetes endorsement for incest - as if he originated it.  Excuse me!  I'm the one who rewrote the Brady Bunch script with everyone jumping into bed with one another after gay marriage gets approved!  So yes.  I'm the one who said: "If you legalize gay marriage, then everyone is going to want to get married."  Although, truth be told, I was actually thinking cohabiting heterosexual couples might be inspired to do so.  What?

Seriously folks - the film people telling you this crap are Hollywood personalities - they are just celebrities.  If anything, they are voice-overs for popular culture.  They live in Gaga-land.  Many of them already live amoral lives to begin with, and they have absolutely no civic or moral authority to change anything more serious than their hairstyle.  These folks are totally dependent upon ratings and fan-based approval.  If they are religious at all, they are probably Scientologists or something New Age - and yet we reprint their statements on this or that as if they make any difference.  Michael Jackson was way ahead of them and look how much he influenced music and dance - and that's about all.

My sister and her family support gay marriage and think I'm mind-controlled by the Catholic Church for opposing it.  Who cares?  Believe me - no one is under the bus.  Crap, there isn't even a real bus.

I'm starting a new category for my blog:  Patheos-watch.  Watch 'em go pick up some Hollywood chick to blog for them now!  It could happen.  What?

British people are so eccentric...

I know!  Americans can be rather weird too.
.
That said, an Anglican priest in the UK is encouraging the poor to shop lift.  'So what' you say?  The poor  may get what they need/want by shoplifting, but they will still have to make restitution!  There's no getting around it - you have to make restitution for what you steal - so why bother?  Silly priest... who better to know about such things though, eh?  Oh I'm just kidding... or am I Fr. __?
.
"Poor people who are desperate for cash have been advised to go forth and shoplift from major stores - by an Anglican priest.   The Rev Tim Jones said in his Sunday sermon that stealing from successful shops was preferable to burglary, robbery or prostitution."   - Priest outrages police by telling congregation: 'My advice to poor is to shoplift'
.
Evidently Anglicans do not have to study moral theology before being ordained.  The bright side of this story is that if he was a fat Franciscan, he could maybe be the new Friar Tuck.

Summer reading.

The Naughty Archbishop.
.
We intellectuals love to share with the Community College graduates what we are reading for the summer - and believe you me - you ignoramuses, it is so not an Oprah's book club selection either.
.
Of course I'm just finishing my re-read of Brideshead Revisited - I might have said, my revisit... oh, oh, ah, ah, ah, ohhhhhhhhh! Oh you funny man you! And I've long thrown the Divine Comedy in the dumpster - what was with that Dante guy anyway?
.
No, now I'm breaking the spine of Weakland's memoir... his tell all - Hollywood Wives style summation of his life.
.
Seriously, with all due respect to his office, A Pilgrim In a Pilgrim Church by Archbishop Weakland is a fascinating, if not at moments, difficult read - in a heart-wrenching sort of way. I just picked it up this afternoon and I've been jumping all over the contents ever since, reading here and there, as well as beginning at the beginning. I think it is an important book historically, and definitely absorbing in the revelations by such a prominent figure in the American Episcopate. I have a million thoughts on his 'revelations' and the scary thing is - I know what he is talking about. I don't think I ever met him - but it sure seems as if I did. (In other words, he wasn't alone in hisFont size vision, mission, agenda for the Church.)
.
I recall when he was named Archbishop of Milwaukee, I thought to myself, "Oh good, a monastic Archbishop - he will restore things as they should be!" Oh, oh, oh, ha, ha, ha, ha, ohhhhh, oh, oh, ah, ah, ah, oooooooooooo! - such a silly boy!
.
So far, the memoir is helpful towards understanding the tragedy of the Archbishop, as well as the dysfunction of the post-Councilor Church in the U.S.. It's a real page turner. The really sad thing is - from what I gather - the Vatican knew. They knew the problems with Weakland and the other progressives - but nothing was done.

The First Lady of Fashion

Shelley's meteoric rise.
.
Seriously.
.
The fashion industry made it clear at its annual awards ceremony Monday night that it's looking to future stars to see it past the doldrums of the recession, shunning longtime favorites and honoring a largely new guard: Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang — and Michelle Obama.
.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America's special tribute award went to the first lady, considered a new player in this world.

.
Noting her "meteoric rise as a fashion icon," CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said Obama had "a unique look that balances the duality of her lives" in her roles as trusted adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and busy mother to their two daughters.

.
But it took host Tracey Ullman less than two minutes in her opening monologue to mention the new first lady of fashion. As complimentary as she was, though, Ullman, a Brit, did say Obama shouldn't have worn a cardigan to meet Queen Elizabeth II. - Fashion World Honors New Stars
.
The American fashion industry is officially dead.

Ryan Seacrest found on a piece of toast...

YES!
.
I saw this very same image on a piece of toast and had to draw it - I was so hungry, I ate it... with psychedelic peanut butter of course - you know - that stuff from Georgia.

Who am I?

"I belong to a literary ground, comprised – including retired profs of literature, history and philosophy – mainly of very educated priest friends and a pair of physicians."

Sister stories.

In the 1950's, the nuns disapproved of girls wearing make-up in grade school. They said it looked cheap; pierced ears were considered cheap too. And of course, scarves tied on the chin - they knew exactly what that meant Missie.
