A reversal of fortune ...

On Trump and his disregard for life.

I'm convinced that Trump has no regard for life, despite his pleasing pro-life religious leaders by pealing back healthcare benefits which included contraception mandates and that kind of stuff imposed by the Affordable Care Act.  It's a good thing for the conscientious objectors, no doubt.  As everyone probably knows, Trump used to be pro-choice, now he's pro-life.  Fine.

Oddly enough, he loves hobnobbing with  dictators and thugs who have no concern for the lives of their enemies, and as is often the case, for their own people.  Like his pals, Trump has no concern for the ecology and the life of non humans - especially when laws and regulations enacted to preserve and care for the environment and wildlife inhibit profit.  Trump is only concerned with money, big business, big profits and satisfying an insatiable consumerism - the art of the deal.  We see this clearly in Trump's policies and attitudes, his corruption of the presidency into a family business, and his disregard for “the needs of the poor, the weak and the vulnerable, in a debate often dominated by more powerful interests”.

"Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years." - Laudato si

Yesterday I learned that the Trump administration published new guidelines allowing the importation from Zimbabwe and Zambia of elephant trophies and lions shot for sport.  The Obama Administration had banned the practice - Trump reversed that.
Hunting interests have scored a major victory with the Trump administration’s decision to allow Americans to bring home body parts of elephants shot for sport in Africa. Another totemic species now looks set to follow suit – lions.
As the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) was announcing it was lifting a ban on the import of elephant “trophies” from Zimbabwe and Zambia, it also quietly published new guidelines that showed lions shot in the two African countries will also be eligible to adorn American homes.
“This all suggests that rather than being the protectors of wildlife, the federal government is now a promoter of trophy hunting,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States.
“They are rolling out the red carpet to the next Walter Palmer, and that same sort of situation will happen all over again,” Pacelle added, referencing the Minnesota dentist who sparked an international furore after he shot and killed Cecil, a famous black-maned lion that was lured from a protected reserve in Zimbabwe.
In 2014, American hunters were barred from bringing home parts of elephants shot in Zimbabwe because of concerns over the conservation of the animals in the country. Last year, the FWS, under the Obama administration, also listed the lion as a threatened species and placed tighter restrictions on bringing back heads, paws and other body parts. - Source

This is such an unfortunate development.

I am so disappointed, so sad about this flagrant disregard for life.  I turned to Laudat si, the encyclical of Pope Francis to find references which speak to the issue of protecting animals from exploitation and extinction, and with new insight, I discovered the immense treasure contained in the Holy Father's teaching.  How sad Catholics dismiss the Holy Father's teaching and admonitions, disputing with him over the environmental challenge we are undergoing.

I did a post on Facebook with pull quotes from Laudato si in support of animal/wildlife.  I want to share what the Holy Father said about St. Francis of Assisi and his love for non human life.  Even Franciscans, sons of St. Francis seem to deny this aspect of the Saint's love of nature, just as they try to explain away his love of absolute poverty.  It is sad how infected with the contagion of worldly materialism and consumerism so many Catholics have become - even those who profess to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis.

Saint Francis of Assisi

10. I do not want to write this Encyclical without turning to that attractive and compelling figure, whose name I took as my guide and inspiration when I was elected Bishop of Rome. I believe that Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. He is the patron saint of all who study and work in the area of ecology, and he is also much loved by non-Christians. He was particularly concerned for God’s creation and for the poor and outcast. He loved, and was deeply loved for his joy, his generous self-giving, his openheartedness. He was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace.

11. Francis helps us to see that an integral ecology calls for openness to categories which transcend the language of mathematics and biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be human. Just as happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all other creatures into his praise. He communed with all creation, even preaching to the flowers, inviting them “to praise the Lord, just as if they were endowed with reason”.[19] His response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists. His disciple Saint Bonaventure tells us that, “from a reflection on the primary source of all things, filled with even more abundant piety, he would call creatures, no matter how small, by the name of ‘brother’ or ‘sister’”.[20] Such a conviction cannot be written off as naive romanticism, for it affects the choices which determine our behaviour. If we approach nature and the environment without this openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously. The poverty and austerity of Saint Francis were no mere veneer of asceticism, but something much more radical: a refusal to turn reality into an object simply to be used and controlled.

12. What is more, Saint Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness. “Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes to know by analogy their maker” (Wis 13:5); indeed, “his eternal power and divinity have been made known through his works since the creation of the world” (Rom 1:20). For this reason, Francis asked that part of the friary garden always be left untouched, so that wild flowers and herbs could grow there, and those who saw them could raise their minds to God, the Creator of such beauty.[21]Rather than a problem to be solved, the world is a joyful mystery to be contemplated with gladness and praise. - Laudato si

I don't sign petitions online or in the mail, but I pray.  Please pray for the protection of all life.  As it says in the Book of Wisdom: "For from the greatness and the beauty of created things, their original author, by analogy, is seen."

Prayer
O Lord, seize us with your power and light,
help us to protect all life,
to prepare for a better future,
for the coming of your Kingdom
of justice, peace, love and beauty.
Praise be to you!
Amen.

  1. All political arguments aside Terry we are in troubled waters. The transfer of wealth, our rightful money and heritage is now being stolen. The license to steal is being written and passed by the most corrupt American Government in our history. Much to the delight and glee of those who are being stolen from. I feel like I now know what life was like in Rome under the corrupt emperors. Killing these magnificent animals for trophies is yet another symptom of the level of deprevity we now live in. We have all been pulled into that swamp.

  2. These are predators in Africa, and, like many other hunts, are a means of population control. Hunting provides employment for guides, hotel and government workers. The head is kept as a trophy but villagers come for the rest so foreigners com8ng 8n t9 h7nt helps the natives and is a conservation technique.

    1. BTW - elephants are not predators. The trophy hunters are predators. In some cases it can be a form of conservation, but it is also a form of greed, Chinese are famous for using rhino horn and tiger parts for aphrodisiac and so on - it is documented this type of harvesting threatens extinction. Trophy hunting of endangered species is indeed immoral. Using your argument one could argue the drug trade helps 'the natives' in South America as well. I think we are going to have to have a bar fight over this one. LOL!

    2. Humans have encroached on elephant habitats. Without diminishing their numbers with a hunt, they would starve.

It's also not up to us to decide whether trophy hunting should be allowed in other coumtries, its up to those countries. You'll find that the aphrodisiac uses are a myth but that parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure many maladies.

Are you going to invite your probation officer? What?

    4. Nan - the myth part is that the aphrodisiac uses actually work - not the fact that animals are poached for whatever reason they claim. The other aspect of this is the poaching - which is a serious problem - even in countries where hunting is permitted. Trophy hunting is immoral. It may not be up to us to regulate trophy hunting in other countries, but it is up to us to end the trade in body parts.

  3. Animals are not people. They can be killed for sport or for food and it is not immoral. I have no problem with Trump overturning this rule. I believe Trump is truly pro-life. I believe he has had some sort of conversion on the issue.

    1. Trump is more pro-life than Obama or Clinton could ever hope to be. Clinton and Obama support abortion on demand !00%.
I may not agree with President Trump's outlandish behavior many times over but he has done more than Obama or Clinton ever have in terms of the pro-life movement.

The killing for sport is nothing new ... as old as time. But hey, I'm no hunter so I can't relate and rarely if ever think about such stuff as there are more important things to get done and to do and to stress about in my neck of the woods.

    6. A con man who did right by getting Obama's henchmen off the backs of the Little Sisters of the Poor when he tried so hard to get them to capitulate to his demands they implement his HHS contraceptive mandate against their religious beliefs and moral conscience.

I applaud President Trump for that

    8. Please, do you think I would post my opinion if I did not know what I'm talking about?

The Supreme Court found that the mandate as constructed by the Obama administration violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, which requires that the federal government use the least invasive and most narrowly focused means available when burdening Americans’ religious exercise. The Court rightly found that a universal mandate with no exceptions could hardly be considered the least burdensome option. The Obama administration responded with a revised rule that may or may not have satisfied the Court — the avalanche of litigation it inspired certainly suggested that it did not satisfy the litigants. Further revision to the rule was both welcome and prudent.

President Donald Trump announced new reforms that would broaden conscience exemptions to the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate, expanding protections beyond small and closely held businesses to publicly traded companies and other employers as well as extending protections not only to those with religious objections but to those with moral objections that are not specifically religious in nature. This is an excellent development: The overbearing contraception mandate was an assault not only on religious liberty but on the legal standing of private conscience itself. (The mandate included types of contraception that, as even the Obama administration’s FDA acknowledged, might instead operate post-conception to prevent implantation and thus kill the early embryo.)

    9. I give credit where credit is due and the Trump administration has it on this one despite it not being 100% complete. I am happy the Little Sisters of the Poor are relieved of the burden Obama tried so hard to impose on them. They can now return to focus on caring for the elderly poor and give witness to the rest of us what being pro-life is all about.

      Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

    11. "Animals are not people" they are still God's creation - St Francis would always be reminded of the Passion of Jesus Christ Crucified every time St Francis saw one of God's creatures suffer.

Hunting has been condemned by Catholic Tradition - you just refuse to listen.

    12. Your article is outdated. The National Review piece is more current being dated as of 10/2017. That being said. many have benefitted from the Trump administration's AG's revisions and I for one am glad.

Just ask the EWTN chairman, Mr. Michael Warsaw:

It was the SC unanimous decision that favored the LSP case. His order was how to apply that ruling. I will admit there is little to like in his behavior but You I do like.

    14. Animals can be hunted for food and for controlling their numbers...(i.e. deer) Not for sport by some spoiled rich people (and I have many hunters in my family.) The only "conversion" Trump had is to bolster his base..the man has no deep beliefs on anything other then getting what he wants...(again, I voted for him so I am not a 'liberal,") Its fine if people like his stance on abortion, but it annoys the heck out of me when they try to convince themselves that he is a Christian with deeply held beliefs of any kind other then what will work at the moment.

  4. Trump has done nothing for the pro life movement but conned them and taken their votes. He wanted Marla to abort Tiffany and to her credit she refused. As for hunting, big game hunting is a blood sport done by the rich with lots of backup to enhance their masculinity. Deny climate change, kill off endangered species, steal anything not nailed down but wave a flag talk tough and demean anyone who disagrees. This is the most horrid group of grifters ever let lose on the world. This is the new world order. We will all be poorer, both spiritually and financially. I will patiently wait for the dirty truth to be revealed. Even then there will be defenders that he only wanted to MAGA.

  5. Wallace I agree with you - the Trump family is like a mob family in my opinion. Too much money, too much leisure time, too many personal business interests mixed in their foreign policy - exploitative and greedy is how to describe this lot.

'Trophy' hunters, maybe not all, but probably the entire Trump family who are clearly out for the 'win' exhibit a dark triad of behaviors, as suggested by the following Psychology Today article: "personality traits of some who hunt for sport (can be linked) to a different 'triad' of behaviours, known ominously as the ‘dark triad’. This includes narcissism (egotistical admiration of one’s own attributes, and a lack of compassion), Machiavellianism (being deceitful, cunning and manipulative) and psychopathy (lack of remorse or empathy, and prone to impulsive behaviour).” I think the greed and materialism and total lack of empathy, as well as the obvious narcissism and deceitfulness is easily observed and documented in the Trump father and sons. They are despicable.

I can't stand them any longer. Yep, I'll pray for them, but I do not support their carpetbagging scam and self promotion.

  6. hmmmmmm....maybe that's why Steve Skojec refuses to write on Laudato si...the reason he gives is simple..."I just don't care."

St Francis saw the Passion of Jesus Christ every time he saw a creature Suffer.

Hunting is not part of Catholic Tradition. Its been condemned by John of Salisbury back in the 1100's some rad trads refuse to read his work condemning hunting.

Always said that Rad Trads care more for guns, hunting etc than real Catholic Tradition. No rel love for the passion either.

    1. I invoke St. Giles on this - St Giles (650 AD – 710 AD) lived in solitude in the forest of Nimes where he ate a vegetarian diet and where his sole companion was a red deer. The King’s hunters chased the deer to her refuge with Giles. When they shot an arrow at her, they hit and wounded Giles instead who later became patron of cripples.

BTW - Nan packs heat - just like Z-man.

  7. And another thing - gosh I wish I could post funny gifs in the com box. Anyway:

Respect for the integrity of creation

2415 The seventh commandment enjoins respect for the integrity of creation. Animals, like plants and inanimate beings, are by nature destined for the common good of past, present, and future humanity.195 Use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe cannot be divorced from respect for moral imperatives. Man's dominion over inanimate and other living beings granted by the Creator is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation.196

2416 Animals are God's creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.197 Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.

2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image.198 Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons.

  8. All very true and interesting. We had neighbors when I was growing up. Two matrons who took a cab up into Canada to get their English bull dogs who they loved inordinately. One dog went mad on them from so much love and turned on them. Meanwhile the kids who passed their house were shoed away as though they were the animals. Hunters I know show great respect for their catch and only kill for useful purpose.

  9. Terry and All -

With respect, I think St. Francis's view is that loving a creation of God does not exclude us from loving His other creations (including elephants and even Donald Trump!) If we love, care for, and protect our fellow humans, it follows that we should also care for His other creations, whether they are animals, the seas, the skies, and everything in between.

Politics aside, I heard a homily once on whether dogs and cats and our animals go to Heaven. Father said God created them and gave them feelings, allowing them to show love and loyalty to humans. He said that perhaps it will please God to include them in Heaven with His other faithful servants.

I know this isn't strictly in accord with Church teaching, but it is a beautiful thing to consider all the same. After all, how will any of us know until we get there, God willing?!

God bless and protect all here - Susan, ofs
