November 4, 1958 Coronation of Pope St. John XXIII

I'm so old - I remember almost every detail.

    1. I'm older than you then. I'm learning to accept being old - I suppose.

I was an exceptionally pious child until high school. I remember the newspapers when Pius XII died, and television reports - it was huge for me, and I think well covered. Pius was still considered a war hero - the Angelic Pastor. Then the conclave and then John XXIII - it was like JPII. Many photos, Pathe documentary footage or newsreels as they were called, and so on. Then the Council was announced - seriously exciting and great hope - and so much joy - it was palpable. Nothing like today.

Just the memory of it helped ground me to see the 'hermeneutic of continuity' as they say.

  2. I guess I accepted getting old when I accepted my first Social Security check.
