Devotion to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus

Today is the Feast of the Precious Blood.

It was a favorite devotion of St. John XXIII, who approved and promulgated the Litany of the Precious Blood and issued an Apostolic Letter on Devotion to the Precious Blood in 1960.

The Church's wonderful advances in liturgical piety match the progress of faith itself in penetrating divine truth. Within this development it is most heart-warming to observe how often in recent centuries this Holy See has openly approved and furthered the three devotions just mentioned. From the Middle Ages, it is true, many pious persons practiced these devotions, which then spread to various dioceses and religious orders and congregations. Nevertheless it remained for the Chair of Peter to pronounce them orthodox and approve them for the Church as a whole. _ St. John XXIII

St. John XXIII, pray for us!

  1. For me, very interesting. I didn’t know. In the hospital chapel where I attended Mass today, the Feast of St Oliver Plunkett was celebrated. He also shed much blood when executed at Tyburn.

This afternoon I was discharged from hospital after spending two days shedding blood. The stuff poured from mouth, nose any eyes on Sunday and I was hospitalised within an hour. I even lost my vision for a while. Doctors eventually stemmed the outpouring after two hours but kept me monitored for the next couple of days until the bleed eventually dried up. Apparently, the excessive bleed was down to a combination of blood-thinning drugs and a burst blood vessel in the bridge of my nose! It was scary at the time it happened, especially when it began pouring from over my lower eyelids. I couldn’t see this but it scared my wife at the time and even one of the ambulance medics who had never witnessed such a thing before. But a doctor later told me. “It happens.”

  2. Oh my goodness! BG - I will be praying for you. Blood from the eyes is scary. I pray you recover - you've been in the hospital a lot - you have to stay away from there. ;)

  3. Here is a devotion to the Precious Blood that deserves to be widely known.
The Seven Offerings of the Precious Blood

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for the propagation and exaltation of my dear Mother Thy Holy Church; for the safety and prosperity off her visible head, our chief pastor the Bishop of Rome, for the cardinals, bishops, and pastors of souls, and for all the ministers of the sanctuary.
Glory be to the Father... (seven times).
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for the peace and concord of Catholic Kings and princes, for the humiliation of the enemies of our Holy faith, and for the welfare of all Christian people.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for the repentance of unbelievers, the uprooting of heresy, and the conversion of sinners.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all my relations, friends and enemies; for the poor, the sick, and the afflicted, and for all those for whom Thou, my God, knowest that I ought to pray, or wouldst have me pray.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all who this day are passing to the other life; that Thou wouldst save them from the pains of hell, and admit them quickly to the possession of Thy glory.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all those who love this great treasure, for those who join with me in adoring and honouring it, and for those who strive to spread devotion to it.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.

Eternal Father! I offer Thee the merits of the Precious Blood of Jesus, Thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all my wants, spiritual and temporal; in suffrage for the holy souls in purgatory, and chiefly for those who were most devout lovers of this Blood, thhe price of our redemption, and of the sorrows and pains of our dear Mother, most holy Mary.
    Glory be.. etc.
Blessed and praised for evermore be Jesus who hath saved us with His Blood.
Glory be to the Blood of Jesus, now and for ever, and throughout all ages. Amen.
