The Al Smith Dinner

I hope they laughed so hard they peed all over themselves.

Who cares?

  1. Mittens said the president's remarks brought to you by the letter O and the number 16 trillion. Video posted all over teh internets.

  2. You know, I've really been irritated to read some of the commentary from the Traddies (i.e. Rorate Caeli, whom I greatly admire in their saner moments) regarding Cardinal Dolan.

Besides showing themselves to be lacking in any sense of civility (whatever happened to catching more flies with honey than vinegar?), they seem to be missing the essence of God's mysteries.

I mentioned to someone a while back that the 1980 Al Smith dinner, with Reagan and Carter, pivoted on Carter's shrill, political comments in contact to Reagan's humorous, self-effacing jokes. Ultimately the event redounded to Reagan's benefit. One could imagine a similar result from last night.

God works in mysterious ways. While one of those ways might have been for Cardinal Dolan to not invite Obama, another one might have been allow people to compare and contrast the two.

Are we really so arrogant as to preclude what ends God wills from these means?

And if you're going to criticize the Cardinal, or even just disagree with him, at least show a little class.
