Mixed messages? Not at all.

Straight talk on Church teaching.

According to a new book, the Pope says condoms are okay for male prostitutes.  Asked why the sudden change, the Holy Father reportedly said, "They're going to hell anyway."

That's all folks!  (Yep, I made that up.)

So anyway, here's the real story...  Balloons for Austria.

Naturally members of the Vatican press are falling all over themselves to correct any misunderstanding as regards Church teaching...  the actual, really real story here:  Condom usage is a sticky subject.  Or you can just read Fr. Z and his commenters and find out what the wordpress-magisterium thinks.

Evidently the subject of blow-up dolls was not even discussed  in the interview.  Pity.

  1. I can see individuals and the media taking his words to mean this or that. Actually, that's already happening!

I think I shall wait for the book to understand the context of his words. Oh, expect more flurry when the book comes out.

  2. are you making fun of WYD? the WYD that was instituted by the late Pope John Paul II, possibly going to be St John Paul the Great? as a WYD alum (1995, Manila) i am greatly disappointed....

I look forward to the book. The previous installment ("Salt of the Earth") was a fantastic read, and should have put to rest any thought that Benedict is not interested in dialogue with theologians who have different ideas.

  4. I don't see what the fuss is. A gay man goes to a bar and has sex with a stranger in supply closet. If he uses a condom the odds of him going to home to his poor wife and giving her a disease are somewhat lessened. He is a sinner who is hardened and dead in his sin. Maybe he'll change or maybe not. In the mean time at least he won't kill his wife. That seems pretty sensible to me.

  5. Brother William, WYD was instituted by JPII but it's not an important part of the Faith. The Creed does not mention pep rallies. A pope can say and do a lot of things but only when he is teaching on the deposit of Faith is he infallible. You can be a good Catholic and think WYD is a silly waste of money. You can be a good Catholic and refuse to send your kid to the next one. It's like Theology of the Body. You don't have to buy into it to be Catholic and good Catholics are perfectly free to mock it.

  6. Dymphna, you seem to suggest that it's okay for gay men to marry women but still have anonymous sex with men. The last time I checked, neither of those things was okay with the church.

  7. No, I'm not saying it's okay but plenty of gay men do ruin women's lives by pretending to be straight.

  12. Dymphna: thanks for clarifying this. for years, i thought wyd is part of the great tradition of the Most Holy Roman Catholic church, like the EF masses, that we should be willing to be martyred just for it. of course, i never doubt the goodness or the catholicity (or even orthodoxy) of our good, catholic, orthodox terry.
