Archbishop Luis Ladaria SJ

A Jesuit is named to head the CDF. Yay! Him loves Jesuits.
Born in Manacor, on the Spanish island of Majorca, Archbishop Ladaria is known to be a kind, affable and theologically conservative prelate who has a special interest in patristics, the branch of theology that deals with the lives, writings, and doctrines of the early Christian theologians.
On being appointed by Benedict XVI as Secretary to the CDF in 2008, he gave an interview with the magazine 30Giorni in which he said “it doesn’t take much effort to find out the relevance of the Fathers of the Church” whose work we must “read and savor” to be “better able to approach the freshness of the Gospel message, Jesus.” He said that is of “permanent value rather than something tied to what is topical, which by its nature is variable, changing minute by minute.”
He also said he does not like “extremisms, either progressive, or traditionalist ones” but believes “there is a via media” which is the “correct path to take, even if each of us has his own peculiarities, because, thanks be to God, we do not repeat, we are not clones.”
In the same interview, he underlined the role of the CDF which is first about “promoting and then, if necessary, protecting” the faith. He added that the Congregation “always moves with discretion and speaks exclusively through its acts.” - Pentup Edward

3. This is a worrisome development.
4. Pope Francis has chosen not to renew his term (contract). This not the same as saying that he has been removed. Perhaps someone will be appointed that may be more acceptable to Pope Francis. I would do the same but at the same time I would need to appoint someone who was qualified to do the job and not just a "Yes Person"
5. I wouldn't be surprised if the successor of Cardinal Müller would start by praising Amoris Laetitia for its "clarity." But the Good Lord has His own many ways to protect His Church from error."

Anyway, from reading about the Archbishop so far I like him and he looks like a very nice gentleman and a committed son of the Church. You don't get all of those degrees just to slant the Church to the left.

That's right. Gosh - paging through Catholic news aggregators one sees panic. Just about every story coming out of the Vatican is turned into some sort of anti-Christ scenario.

Catholic friends and others who are interested in what's going on in the Catholic Church:
Although I was saddened by Pope Francis's decision not to renew Cardinal Gerhard Muller for a second term as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith, I take consolation and encouragement from the fact that the Holy Father has appointed as Cardinal Muller's successor Archbishop Luis Ladaria. I know both men and hold them in high esteem. I have worked for Cardinal Muller and with Archbishop Ladaria. Both are faithful Christians who are deeply committed to the Church's doctrinal and moral teachings.
I am not privy to the Pope's reasoning in making these decisions, but I can tell you what is NOT going on here. He is not replacing a "conservative" with a "liberal." First, these political labels mislead rather than illuminate in discussions of the work of the CDF and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Second, if by a "liberal" one means a person who favors or would support the revision or reinterpretation of the Church's moral teachings (on the sanctity of human life, for example, or on marriage and sexual morality) to make them more palatable to people who don't like them, then I can assure you that Archbishop Ladaria is not a "liberal."
This is not a big "shake up" or an ideological purge. Indeed, Archbishop Ladaria was Cardinal Muller's lieutenant at the CDF and the two men worked together beautifully, singing from exactly the same hymn book. I witnessed this myself in putting together the 2014 Humanum conference on marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife. The two men were completely of one mind in upholding the biblical and natural law understandings of marriage and sexual morality. Moreover, in addressing these matters in private meetings as well as in public settings, Archbishop Ladaria spoke from conviction, not mere allegiance to his boss. I do not expect him to "grow" into someone who is prepared to jettison or soft-pedal the Church's moral witness.
Still, I am sorry to see Cardinal Muller leave the CDF. He is a treasure of the Church and a true apostle. May God reward him--all six feet seven inches of him--for his dedicated and selfless service. I know I am far from alone in feeling enormous gratitude for his work and witness.
This is terrible news. A Jesuit!?!?!?! Maybe all those crazy protestants are right and there is a plot of the Jesuits to take over the Church and the world.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, I've met ALOT of Jesuits, and have yet to met one that is orthodox. Not A Single One!
I predict that like everyone Frankie has appointed this one will fall into line and tow the party line.
