Defending Trump ...

Tom Ford blowing bubbles with Richard, 1986

From the 'liberals'?

Does he need anyone to defend him?  He's sort of like Pope Francis - he doesn't need anyone to defend him from his critics, or so I'm told about Francis.  So what is with those who supported Trump rallying to his defense over stupid comments made by a fashion designer?

Tom Ford, along with a few other fashion designers, said he wouldn't dress Melania Trump - she doesn't fit his image.  The new First Lady can dress herself, and has been doing so all along.  The statement by Ford was in response to an interview question posed to several other designers.  Ford has made rather direct comments about his clientele, reportedly telling potential customers they were 'too fat' for his clothes.  Suggesting Melania didn't fit his image may have been a polite way of saying something less cordial - so he maybe was being nice.  (He's a recovered alcoholic and said he's much nicer now that he quit drinking.)

On Facebook I came across a quote from Gerard Nadal, not sure who he is, but he took offense to Ford's remark, and in his defense against 'liberals', he stated:  "What they consistently fail to see is that the poor and lower middle class do not want Donald Trump and his family to live as they do. Quite the opposite. They wish to live as Trump does."

I hope not.

From what I've read from the so-called 'Rust-belt' out of work people simply want their jobs back - they want to earn a living and raise a family.  I never heard anyone say they wanted to live like Trump - unless they were contestants on American Idol or were out of work actresses looking for a billionaire.

The fashion designer statements are business as usual in a superficial, consumer, ego-driven culture.  Tom Ford is promoting his films and his clothing line.  Others would jump at the chance to have their label on Mrs. Trump's clothes. The discussion of this issue is pretty much vain and foolish and superficial compared to the reality of the working and non-working poor.  It is snob talk - just like the industry these people work in.  It's ad copy for them.

As for the poor and working class desiring to live as the Trumps do, that's not what this is about, and if it is for some, it's misguided and patronizing - and perhaps equally elitist. The Trump lifestyle is no more enviable than the fashionistas and their Hollywood counterparts.  Do you really want to be Miranda Priestly?

If you voted for Trump, if you like him, that's just fine.  We should in fact support our President, but you don't have to like him, much less defend his lifestyle.  There's nothing wrong with being rich and famous, if that is what you aspire to, fine - but the unemployed, the working poor and ordinary people are pretty much content with a sufficiency.  They want a home, an income, food on the table, healthcare, education, and family stability.  I don't believe ordinary people envy the rich and famous any more than I believed Imelda Marcos, who once defended her extravagant wardrobe saying, "Never dress down for the poor, they won't respect you for it."

Tom Ford being nice.

  1. After seeing the monstrosity he put on Mooch which looked like an orthopedic bandage, Melania is probably grateful. I think his designs are awful and his models terrifyingly skinny.

As do we all, otherwise why did so many vote for Trump?

As far as Ford goes, another self-important rich blowhard. I remember seeing pictures of him making out with his latest boytoy on the beaches of Copacabana both wearing nothing but speedos ... nothing was left to the imagination. I smirked then ... I smirk now.

    2. I don't judge him - he works, directs an industry. It flash and snap. It's based upon the most transitory and elusive of industry - fashion and trend. It vanishes. I hope that the Trump White house is never about such sleight of hand.

I know people disagree with me - even hate it when I say I will miss the Obama White House - I love them. But that too is personal taste and fashion I suppose.

  2. I cannot relate to Tom Ford. Please remember our founding fathers were liberals even radicals in their day. Our freedom is based on their courage and work.

    1. In the midst of all of this self-important hot air, the cool cat so far has been Melania herself. She purrs quiet confidence while dressing to the nines. I like her style - classy lady. I hope she stays that way as her critics fall all over themselves trying to out do themselves with the most criticisms of our next First Lady.

    2. I wish the term liberal was eliminated - I think I'm both - conservative and liberal - I don't understand these divisions.

    3. Oh - Wallace - there was a film in the '50's 'Will Success Spoil Ross Hunter' - I think of that with people like Ford - he's a talented guy, gifted, and very smart - but success has spoiled him.

  3. I get tired of the snarky and negative comments about Melania; there's no reason for all the negativity, except she's much more beautiful than Bill. They say it's unprecedented for a first lady not to bother going to Washington and she may decide that sticking with the routine and staying in Manhattan is better for her and Barron. I wouldn't want to live in a fishbowl, especially one that is hostile to her; I take it as hostile based on nasty combox remarks that don't seem grounded in truth. I have seen her dressed beautifully and seen dresses I didn't like; not a reflection on how they look on her, just not to my taste.

I can't imagine that a president has too much time to spend with his family and it might be just as well to carve out some decent time every couple of weeks rather than 5 min at bedtime or breakfast. I could imagine Donald and Barron having takeout fast food in the white house kitchen though; send out Barron and the secret service to pick it up, with Melania rolling her eyes and having roast beef instead.

The left out Trump is Tiffany; I know she recently graduated from college but have no idea whether she's back in CA with mom or will be working at the Trump business or for Ivanka's company. That isn't my business but I'm a bit surprised that it hasn't been in the news.

    1. I think Melania is fine, I hope she doesn't hold that mannequin pose at every official photo op though. The Trumps are just fine as well. I just don't like them or their style.

That said - I sincerely love the Obamas and their style. Of course, like Steve Martin's character in The Jerk, I'm a little black boy in a white man's body.

      What?

    2. Agreed..I don't like most of his policies..but the Obamas bring style and class to the WH..more so then any Clinton or Bush did. My neighbor is mad at me for accusing her of slut shaming Melanie...I was kidding..the world has gone mad!

  4. So, the rallies will continue, Donald will commute, Melania will stay in NY. I am reminded of Frank Sinatra's song, "I did it my way." Which is fine so long as the economy does not tank and he does not get us blown up. Like him or hate him you gphave to admit he is ill prepared for the responsibilities. We will have to pray him and us through the next four years. I might take up knitting as a distraction.
