The first year ever.
I'm Scandinavian descent - mostly - German/Austrian/Irish on my mother's side - which means I believe the Vikings were here first. Columbus discovered America for the Europeans. The Spanish brought the Gospel. Someone had to do that.
Indigenous people were already here - obviously they discovered the landmass first, and formed their own civilization - I have no problem with celebrating that. I also think it is important for us to understand the grave injustices done to indigenous peoples by Europeans and to acknowledge that.
Giving up Columbus Day doesn't change anything for me.
This is just another reason I'm glad I don't live in Minneapolis anymore. Down here in Texas, we're concerned with more important things - like creating jobs and (most unfortunately) trying to contain Ebola.

DeleteYeah, there's a popular shirt down here that says, "If at first you don't secede, try, try again." I can live with that sentiment! My favorite is a sign that reads "Texas: America, Only Better." :)

DeleteSome of them are! :) OK, serious for a moment - the bishop here is thought to be more liberal, if you will (and I hate those labels too), but there are some outstanding parishes in the Dallas diocese. The Fort Worth diocese is, I would say, more "conservative," and there are some terrific parishes in other parts of the state. A mixed bag, or in other words - Catholic!
