The controversial Italian writer, who died in 1991 due to complications of AIDS, had been reconciled with the Church before he finally succumbed to the disease. He died a Catholic.
Wayward in so far as he lived an active gay lifestyle and his novels dealt with that. He maintained an idiosyncratic spiritual life however - but lived it apart from the Church. He remained attracted to the Carmelite mystics and these influenced his spirituality.

Did he lived a wayward life and had an animosity with the Church before his conversion?
