Mass Chat: Gather Us In ...

All Are Welcome.

After the applause welcoming all the visitors, as well as special guest con-celebrant, Fr. Legion of Christ on home-visit with his Mom; when the din of greeting everyone around us finally died out, Mass began as usual.  I was surprised that during the prayer of the faithful not a prayer was uttered for those who died in Colorado this past weekend - nothing was mentioned in the homily either.  Not that such a prayer is required - and I realize I probably shouldn't expect such prayers at Mass - after all, what does the incident in Aurora, Colorado have to do with us?  Besides, we don't usually pray for the victims of the weekly massacres in Nigeria or Syria either.

Although we always pray for good weather for the parish festival and walk-a-thons and stuff.

Walk in the Reign.

    1. I'm thinking that's a good thing? Maybe not. You are going to burst pretty soon, aren't you.

  2. This is why I love your Mass Chat Terry. But on a serious note, you are filling up what is lacking in the Sufferings of Christ. You bring that to each & every Mass where you are present. All Souls were blest that at least you were there. You ! were there !

    1. Walter - thanks! I haven't heard from you for awhile and I was wondering if you were still reading - glad that you are.

  3. I have long since stopped having high expectations of the local Missa Normativa. I go armed with my Father Lasance Prayer book and Magnificat and do my best to be recollected. I was mercifully spared "Gather us in" this morning. Last week oddly enough we prayed for the Muslims during Ramadan........

    1. Oh man! I wish I had known that - I'd have noted it. That is soooooooooooo stupid, so stupid. Most Catholics think Ramadan is like Lent - it is not. But it just goes to show you the stuff they will include in the prayers of the faithful.

  4. We prayed for the dead. Including the dead from Colorado. Of course, we prayed for the Pope (pick a pope, any pope) and all the clergy, as well as that our civic leaders will back off...oh, that's not what he said though. However, we prayed neither for Muslims nor armloads of kitties. But then, my parish doesn't gather them in.

Servus, in this round of priests, we got the one from St. Agnes and fear that altar rails and Latin Mass are in our future.

    1. Oh I think everyone should pray for armloads of Kitties! but NOT during the prayer of the faithful.

O Nan I envy you and everyone there in your future. I pray specifically every day for just those things for a universal restoration more specifically that finally Vatican II's liturgical renewal per Sacrosanctum Concilium be realized.

    2. Fr. ain't like that. I think he was transitional for St. Agnes - to bring them up to date as it were - without harming the good spirit there. That said - I'm quite sure there will be an EF Mass scheduled for where you are - but the whole turn around thing won't be happening any time soon. This Archdiocese is not like that - never has been. Even before VII we were rather 'progressive'.

    3. People used to ask Fr. JJ and he said there was nowhere in the schedule for EF. We're thinking 10AM.

    4. Wow. And he is Fr. Z's BFF - no room for the EF? Didn't the hoteliers of Bethlehem say that to the Holy Family? (Get it?)

  5. Yes, I was rather shocked when I heard that utterance from the lecturn. Then I thought, well it was a diocesan liturgist who compiled what was and what was not to be prayed for during Mass. Do you have a "Father Lasance Prayer Book"? If you don't you should get one. Leaflet missal used to carry them. If I could only take one item with me to an island that would be what I would take. It's a Gem.

  6. Well at least the Pope included the victims in his prayers:

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI says he's "deeply shocked" by the "senseless violence" in the Colorado movie theater shootings and is offering his prayers so the survivors and relatives of the victims can find strength.

In his traditional Sunday blessing, Benedict said he shared the distress of the families and friends of the victims. He said he was praying for all "as a pledge of consolation and strength" for God.

  7. I think I do have the Fr. Lasance prayer book. I bought it at Leaflet, the source of my Douay-Rheims Bible.

The thing is, you can have the more modern Mass absent craptacular additions. That's what we have; Mass, straight up, without a twist.

    1. Nan, you don't like it (Father Lasance Prayer book)? I really love mine. It's one of those cheap cover editions.

Well, I'll take the 'craptacular additions' any day. I'd move back to the twin cities just to go to St Agnes.

  8. Ummm, when I say "craptacular" I mean giant puppets, liturgical dancers (shudder), et al. You really can have a beautiful Mass without going to either extreme. But I don't think we have flowers anymore.

I can't find my prayer book. It's the one with severe examination of conscience in it, isn't it? What I really loved but had stolen (not on purpose, it was in my computer bag with my first D-R B) was my Confraternity of the Precious Blood prayer book from 1944. I haven't found another.

    1. Ok I wasn't sure about the "craptacular" context but now I'm having visions of St Joan of Arc.

Well, pray to St Anthony to help you find your Father Lasance prayer book. Yes, it has a very good examination of conscience. I'll keep my eye out for a Confraternity of Precious Blood prayer book. Was it a reprint from Leaflet?
