Chick-fil-A

Savaged...

I haven't been following this.  I know - it's like a really big story.  At first I thought it had something to do with Savage Chickens - but I didn't inquire any further.  Because I'm dyslexic - I never recognized the name when they mentioned it on television.  Whenever I came across the name in print, I thought it was Chick-A-flick, although I had no clue what it meant.

Eventually I found out it is the name of a restaurant or fast food place where they make mock fillet mignon out of chickens and sell them as sandwiches - gross!  Anyway - I'm fairly certain there are no such restaurants in Minneapolis, which was another reason I failed to pay much attention to the story.  I also do not eat chicken - unless it's organic, free-range and is given last rites before being killed humanely and I prepared it - but I don't like doing that any more.  Of course, I'd rather eat a real fillet than some vacuum-formed chicken thing any day.

Interestingly, I've gotten along just fine by not reading or listening to much that has been said about the 'issue' - I guess it's an 'issue' now.  I'm here to tell you however, that there is life outside of these 'issues' - did I say that right?  Don't let it control your life.  Think of real cloistered religious, who have no Internet access, no TV, and no newspapers - they don't know what is going on, and they get along just fine.  So why get all worked up about this stuff?  (BTW - the Catholic Bishops said Michele Bachmann was wrong to try and persecute Muslims just because they are foreigners.  But I digress.)

So.  Back to the Chick-a-flick issue.  I did my homework - just because it is an ever present story and I have nothing to open with today.  Thus I forced myself to read a tiny bit more to find out what exactly is going on. I learned that the owners of the business are in trouble for saying they do not support gay marriage.  What's the big deal?  They can say that.  People do not have to approve of gay marriage you know.  I don't support gay marriage either.

So stop bullying these people.  Eat crow instead.

Been eating TONS of food for lunch at Chick-fil-A for a the past 3 days, and taking more home for dinner. Gained 5 pounds. Guess I just see it as a small way of defending the innocent...kinda like sticking up for the little kid who's being threatened on the playground by the drooling cave troll. It's about all the power I have (other than prayer), so I will continue to eat...and get bigger pants.

aside: I spoke with the local franchise owner while I was there and thanked them for their stance (actually the stance of their founder), and for standing up for Truth....she actually had tears in her eyes as she whispered "thank you"; her shoulders dropped perceptably and only then did I realize how tense she had been a moment ago, like she was braced for me to punch her. This is truly sad.

  3. We get take-out from Chick-fil-A after the Saturday evening Vigil Mass at least once a month. I love the food, the service and the fact that they're closed on Sunday. I was very proud of my youngest for standing up for Chick-fil-A on her Facebook page and standing her ground after the usual attacks. Someone posted "Stop the intolerance now." I pointed out that we seem to have plenty of tolerance for gay marriage but let a person of faith affirm publicly what he believes and people want to put him out of business. If folks don't like what Chick-fil-A stands for, they can choose not to patronize the business. But hearing Rahm Emanuel talk about how Chick-fil-A's values "are not our values" I again realized how truly upside down the world is. Anyway, we plan to show our support next Wednesday.

I'm really starting to like you Terry. I am so tired of issues (even pro-life ones, sadly) even though I believe in their cause with my whole heart.
Maybe it's because I spend too much time on the internets.

  5. There are no branches of this chain in my area - in my state, for that matter. What ticks me off is not just the attack on the owner - because he supports traditional marriage he gets called a homophobe, a bigot, etc. - it's when the mayors of Boston and Chicago come out against the chain expanding in those cities. Let the customers decide. (And I'm a vegetarian!)

  6. I've actually never liked Chick Fil-A's food all that much, and haven't been following this story other than the ridiculous Facebook posts of some of my friends and coworkers.

The real story is not so much their stance, but the insane and blathering offense mounted against them by celebrities and even government officials. There are two cities now whose mayors are saying they
Will do everything they can to keep this company out of their cities. Which, by the same logic they may as well tell all religions except for squishy mainline Protestants and Reformed Jews to stay out. Of course, if it was Halal-Filet or something, we wouldn't be hearing this story ....

The ironic thing is that the owners obvious and well-known Christianity is what makes the company close on Sundays and take a hit to profits, in order to ensure a day of rest for ALL employees. It's also the beliefs of the owners that make the way the company treats their employees better than any other fast food chain, or even most restaurant and retail chains in general. But no one cares about this - gay and approval of gay is all that matters.

It's also impressive that the owners took this stance knowing full well it could only hurt them profit-wise. One of Chick-Fil-A's most important markets has always been college campuses - they're often found in student unions and the like. Guess what's going to happen there.

  8. Merc, wouldn't it be Chik-Halal?

I just read that Jeff Bezos from Amazon outed himself as having given $2.5 million to support gay marriage in WA.
