Fr. Thomas Williams
A high-profile American priest in the Legionaries of Christ has acknowledged having had a sexual relationship with a woman and fathering her child, adding another chapter to the growing scandals surrounding the controversial religious order. - Story here
When you are that good looking, chastity is extremely difficult.
It happens.
As we like to say at the parish level. Thank heaven for small blessings. At least it was with a woman and not another man.
ReplyDeleteROFLM arse off!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat's so funny?
DeleteDo the Legionaries allow ugly guys to be priests? Every blasted one I've ever seen has that whole Richard Chamberlain/Fr. Ralph de Briccasart thing going on.
ReplyDelete"Maciel always told me to recruit the most handsome boys from the best families," said Vaca. "They were trained to approach rich women. I'm not saying they had sexual relationships with these women but they did know how to charm them."

I think they should allow them (good looking/easily flattered men)to be priests but keep them off the television and blogger!!! Jesus was no movie star wannabe.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, just to be on the really safe side, lock them up, shave their heads and only let them speak once every two years.
Maybe that's going a bit over the top though?
Like Beckham maybe?
ReplyDeleteMmmm Becks ... occasion of sin ahead ... Mayday! Mayday!
DeleteShadow--they'd be hotter with shaved heads! Like Beckham! Thanks for the eye candy Terry! You sure know how to post 'em!
ReplyDeleteOK, idea number two. Ban all mirrors in their churches/homes/Montana ranches etc, make them grow long long beards and stop them clipping their toenails. That's gotta be a bit gross surely?
ReplyDeleteFr. Frank asks : "Do the Legionaries allow ugly guys to be priests"
ReplyDeleteDo they allow ugly priests on television?
I don't have any inside information, but I suspect Fr. Bannon recruited men who would move and inspire in our age of mass media where physical presence is overly important.
Not that I'M ugly, or anything. Really.
ReplyDeleteThis would have never happened if he were gay.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha!
DeleteThe sexual sin is so subordinate in this whole thing to a child not having their real father. Imagine a little girl who wants to hear from her dad that's she's pretty but her dad is far away. teaching on tv...or a boy who gets bullied at school but when he gets home, there is no dad to confide in. The church needs to urge these priests into laicization for the purpose of marriage for the sake of the only innocent party...the child... unless the couple cannot really be good as a couple.
ReplyDeleteBiblically in the Old Testament, he and she would marry after this sin and unlike all other Jewish marriages, they would never be allowed divorce. Douay Rheims…Deut. 22:28 ” If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, who is not espoused, and taking her, lie with her, and the matter come to judgment: [29] He that lay with her shall give to the father of the maid fifty sides of silver, and shall have her to wife, because he hath humbled her: he may not put her away all the days of his life.”
Bill Bannon writes : "The church needs to urge these priests into laicization for the purpose of marriage for the sake of the only innocent party...the child"
DeleteThat is a really good point.
And not only urge, but demand the priest act like a man and marry the girl.
bill, that's not about pregnancy though - it's because her non-virginity made her "worthless" in that society. The virgin is viewed tainted, whether the sex was willful or not, so the man has to marry her.
ReplyDeleteThis would apply to many of us who committed sins of fornication in our past.
Imagine nowadays that you have a daughter and she stupidly follows the crowd and sleeps with some pimple-faced kid in high school, or worse, is seduced by some jerk. I'd urge her to go to confession and to break off the relationship - I certainly would not urge her to marry the guy.
Also, if she's no longer a virgin, this doesn't in itself make her unworthy to marry in the Christian view of things, *especially* if she is repentant of any sin she has committed. I'd say that in this crazy world, even the best Catholic men and women have sexual sin in their past. And if she was raped, there's no loss of integrity there.
Mercury,
ReplyDeleteYou're way too hard on pimples. Reports indicate it was a woman in a position to refuse financial help...and possibly the daughter of a celebrity of sorts at some level (NCR).. All beside the point. The point is the child experiencing distance, abscence....the daughter with no dad to say she looks pretty.
ps
ReplyDeletenotice in Deut...."if the matter comes to judgement"... probably pregnancy alone would bring it to judgement.
Oh I know what you mean. And I guess we've all been pimple-faced kids at some point :)
ReplyDeleteStill, social conditions being what they are today - it may not be the best idea to make a seducer marry the woman he seduced - for her, mean.
You are right about the child growing up like that - very sad. Of course, doncha know we now live in a country where the president thinks it's totally cool to deliberately and knowingly deprive a child of a mother or a father.
