ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Police in St. Paul are looking for the person or persons who vandalized a city landmark over the weekend.

Sometime between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday someone spray painted 5 of the 6 main doors on the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Police tell KARE 11 the vandalism took the form of upside down white crosses.

At this point investigators aren't sure what the motivation was, but due to the building's religious connections they are pursuing it as a possible bias crime. - Kare 11

I would not be at all surprised to find out the vandalism has a direct connection to the protestors demonstrating at the State Capitol this past weekend.

I didn't know such a thing existed? How is "bias crime" different from "hate crime", vs "crime of passion", vs "vandalism crimes" ...

Guess there is a story behind why the word 'bias' was selected a the key word to use ...
It seems an unfair stretch to automatically jump to "the gays."

Michael - I know. But those vandals used holy oil and exorcism salt - I doubt they'd ever use spray paint, or risk pretending to be satanic. If they did that stuff I would definitely be surprised.
Perhaps they were ultra-montanists, given it was an inverted cross, ie, the Cross of S. Peter. :-p

ReplyDeletepml, according to the cops, it's being investigated as a hate crime. A couple of detectives and several squad cars were sent immediately when it was reported and the graffiti has since been removed.

ReplyDelete... my brain thought it should have read 'hate crime', so why didn't the reporter/newspaper editor use that term vs bias? To soften the impact of the vandalism?

What I find of interest that some crimes are being labeled "hate crimes" while others are not, & what falls in the what-not list. Anyway, the jrnlst who selected the word "bias" vs "hate", signals a message to me.

Unjust laws or poorly reasoned and studied laws seemed to be more open to selective & inconsistent application of them.

ReplyDeleteWhat or whomever...let us as Catholic Christians pray for the offender and for his conversion of heart. Also... remember all the Christians in the East (particularly Egypt, India, Pakistan, China and Iraq) who are under intensive persecution. The persecution in the U.S. will only grow in intensity. Our Lord commands us to pray for our enemies, love those who persecute you. Only in this way can we convert the world.
