Chris Cuomo did a piece on homeless kids from really bad homes last night on ABC's 20/20.

I was like those kids. I had a job though - which got me through graduation from High School. Then I moved in with some one who offered me a home and a comfortable life. Kids need and look for love - they also want to give love - and people are out there to take it from them.

I have long understood that mortal sin has been the cause of all the dysfunction in my family - and in my life. Mortal sin excludes genuine love and charity... and kids.

ReplyDeleteThis can certainly be the case. The inverse is just a plausible, however. Family dysfunctionality can also lead an individual- whether adult or not -into mortal sin, although I believe that Christ's loving mercy is present in situations like those as well.
Yesterday I saw a documentary recounting the life of Aileen Wuornos, who was executed in Florida in 2002. She was one of these homeless kids that was subjected to unspeakable abuse when she was a child. Some of the mistreatment that she experienced makes me want to distance myself completely from the human race.
That's so sad, Terry. I think it is wonderful, and a miracle, that you found your way back to God.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the story of a friend of ours. His mother lied and told him that his dad was dead. Then she got in trouble and had to go to prison. He was raised by grandparents; the grandfather was abusive and the grandmother was afraid to go against him. Yet our friend grew up to be a decent, God-loving man; even though none of his dysfunctional, criminal family were religious. God found him, in the dark tunnel that was his life at that time.

ReplyDeleteThe timing of your post is an interesting coincidence for me. It has been weighing heavily on my heart in prayer lately, all the poor children in in our own country and throughout the world, who are being raised by parents with bad morals, no knowledge of God, or even hatred of God, and who are often mentally ill. May God come to the aid of our children, and to the grown children of such dysfunctional families. Jesus have mercy on us all. Amen
Please pray for 12 year old Chad Stilson who ran away from home after being grounded..he has been missing a week and it is o so cold here in Utah.
