George Tooker still lives...

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." - Mark Twain
.
George Tooker happens to be one of my favorite painters.  Until this morning I had been under the false impression that he was dead.  He isn't - he is still alive.  He happens to be the last remaining artist of a threesome whose work came to influence my own; Paul Cadmus, Jared French, and Tooker.
.
George Tooker converted to Catholicism, having left the Episcopal church shortly after the death of his companion in 1973.  Subsequently, he painted stations of the cross, as well as an altarpiece depicting the Sacraments for the church of St. Francis of Assisi in Windsor, Vermont.

.
George Tooker still lives in Hartland, Vermont.
.
Thank you Tom for calling my attention to this.  My apologies for the mistake.  It actually happened to me once too - someone in Boston told the story I had died and was buried at New Melleray - the story developed after I left Boston abruptly to move back to Minneapolis.

A word about fact checking:  This is the second incident wherein I made a mistake regarding facts on a particular person.  I can't recall what the one before this was - but I welcome any reader to please comment if you disagree or question the accuracy of any of my statements.  I try to verify data, yet in this case I just assumed my information to be factual.  My sincere apologies.  (At least George may have benefitted from my prayers.)

  1. It seems that Abe Vigoda is always trying to prove he is still alive. Reports of his death have circulated frequently.

It brings me great joy to know that Tooker became a Catholic. There is a short documentary on his life that you can watch on Youtube in three parts. I was moved by his benevolent and kind disposition.

  2. Tom! I'm so happy you caught this - I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH MR. TOOKER! What a thrill. He is so hard of hearing however and I had to speak much more slowly this time - contrary to one report I read he is still painting. He goes for dialysis 3 times a week and I told him I pray for him - he seemed to be very touched. I'm so happy he is alive and I got to talk to him again.

    Thank you Tom!

Oh, and BTW, I'm still alive too. I'll be sure to let you know ahead of time when I'm not. LOL!!

  4. Terry, that's neat that you got to talk to him! Thanks for making us aware of his work, previously I hadn't known about him. I love this picture "Meadow I"; it looks like it might be Mary and Joseph.

Terry: Thank you for the link to Tooker. I have to laugh. My Father, who was a lawyer, was never fond of art he could not understand. My brother is an art dealer and worked at Soetheby's at one time. He gave my parents a piece done by Rothko--a rose. Something my Father could understand.

    Can't remember who said that (G.K. Chesteron?...anyway)...
My mother always told me that she read the obituaries each day to make sure she wasn't dead...is that Irish or what??

Padre: lol. VERY Irish. So glad you are back. And in very fine form, I might add. Padre, I am afraid your prayers are not working very well. I am still unemployed. Could you please expand your repetoire? Maybe a few more Aves? Many thanks.

  8. You got to talk to him? WOW!!

I hope he manages to get better, so I too shall pray for him. Do post something if there are any changes to his health.
