The ban on Mother's Day...

In the United States, yesterday was Mother's Day.
.
I want the celebration stopped. (I need a cause!) Yesterday I picketed outside of a Hallmark store, moved on to a Walgreen's, and then I finished picketing outside a garden center, with my "Stop Mother's Day" sign and brochures. Stop the waste of paper for cards. Stop exploiting garden plants for gifts - how many plants die needlessly for nothing? Stop alienating kids without moms. My mother died in 1982 and I have been an orphan ever since. The holiday is discriminatory and humiliating. Stop the insanity! (So many times my mom ended our phone conversations with, "I think we should have you committed!" And then she hung up. Subsequently, every Mother's Day I am reminded how much I miss her.)

.

Next year we march onto the Cathedral! The slogan will be, "Run for an end to Mother's Day!"

  1. You're not just planning to stop with Mother's Day, are ya? What about Father's Day too? If you put an end to it in the next month, I won't have to get my husband a gift (from the kids to give him). I'd be in your debt!

My Mother's Day gift was a carnation hubby and the kids bought as we left Mass. I went to the Friends Plant Sale on Friday and bought myself plants AND dug up the old garden AND planted all the new plants myself. After Mass hubby treated me and the kids to breakfast as McDonald's *sigh* I surmise Mother's Day just isn't what it used to be...at least at our house :)

  2. Trivia: the woman who started Mother's Day (after her mother died - she remembered her mother once saying "Mothers should have a day all their own") HATED what it became, and would be appalled at what it is today.

    More trivia:
That same woman never married and never had children.

I'm with you Terry, I try not to be too cynical, but my mother was and remains very abusive--mother's day just reminds me of her abuse--a day I would rather forget, and the same goes for father's day!

Terry, so that's how you developed your wonderful sense of humor! After a while, some people become a caricature of themselves, so that you just have to gasp a laugh (not my mom, she's hilarious in a wonderful way), draw a breath, and say, "um, love you too; bye". Forgiveness isn't about warm feelings, just that you pray that the person eventually repents so he/she isn't in hell.

The Catholic Mother's Day is Laetare Sunday, once called "Mothering Sunday." It derives from the Introit of the Mass on Laetare Sunday. In a Catholic culture all flows out of the liturgy and back into it.

  10. I have been enjoying Ms. Davis on TCM and appreciate your obvious fondness.

This mother's day I too wanted it to at least change from the obnoxious Halmark Card/Consumerism. Thank goodness we could celebrate the Church's Birthday instead.

But, truthfully this mother's day, was a reflection mostly for me on what a great gift my children were to me from God.

Thanks for the laughs. God Bless!

  11. I whole-heartedly agree, and I am a mother. It isn't fun for us either.
