I found the first comment funny because of the 'poor you' response, and laughed because Skojec complained of this apparent burden - e.g. to point out everything that is wrong with this papacy. He seems like a nice guy with a good sense of humor, so I wonder if he was joking? To be sure, Skojec doesn't have to write about the stuff he finds wrong with the pope. Although Ferrara claims they have no choice but to do so? Really?
On another post at the Remnant, there's a screen shot of Ferrara apparently laughing with Michael Matt in their video discussion, and if the text is any indication - they appear to be making fun of Pope Francis. I suppose they may have been compelled to do it? No choice in the matter?
Today, and in days to come, many will be commenting on what the Holy Father said to the press on his way back to Rome: "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not a Christian." - Pope Francis gave that answer when asked about Trump, adding, “We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt.”
Nothing wrong with that - the Pope also offers Trump the benefit of the doubt.
In the ensuing discussions which will inevitably take place, please keep in mind how not a few of the Pope's critics accuse him of not even being Catholic - and this from people who claim to be more Catholic than the Pope. I suspect they will condemn the Pope for having answered the question about Trump the way he did.

Meh ... these folks whom you quote/mention all sound so smug, so sure of themselves, so Catholic. Just my opinion but I'll take the faces of the many who support and pray along with and love our Holy Father, warts and all.

I can't be bothered with online armchair, "I'm a better Catholic than you" folks. Regardless of my personal dislike for them though, I do remember them in my prayers and I ask the Lord to help me forgive these folks as I am no better.
I don't dislike all of them. They have to earn a living somehow.

DeleteYou are a kinder and much more charitable person than I. I lack the finesse and the patience for such folks so I stay away from those blogs/forums as I have said before, they did me more harm than good.
That being said, it seems there is an uproar over Papa's comments on the plane regarding contraceptives and his take on Trump as you have already mentioned. I had a good chuckle with Fr. Z's headline and on NEW ADVENT.

If anything our beloved and most hardy Papa does is to keep everyone on their toes. I thank God he is so sturdy despite that near fan enthused tumble in beautiful Mexico. ;p
Terry you are the first source I have seen who includes the benefit of the doubt qualification. All our news sources want is sensationalism,division and dissent. It will not change so we might as well just be content to ignore. Francis is a bit of a loose cannon when giving interviews on the plane. I think he escapes the clutches of his handlers for those few moments.

I love him.
One of the things I love so much about Pope Francis can be seen in that clip of him rebuking a woman in the crowd in Mexico for pulling him over the rail and on top of some children and not letting go of his hand, telling her, "Don't be selfish! Don't be selfish!" with those unmistakable hand gestures that Italians and Latinos do. He is no pushover. I love how deals with that situation without relying on his bodyguards. He's open-faced. He doesn't put on a face for cameras. He doesn't use guile-like maneuvers in answering questions. He has his feet on the ground. He is with the people. Consoling and rebuking. He has fire in him. He is totally unself-conscious. I love Pope Francis so much.
DeleteI agree Paul. It's interesting - every time Benedict went someplace I worried and prayed for his safety and asked others to do so as well - I felt protective of him . I still pray for him that way. With this Pope I don't worry. I pray every day for him, but I don't worry about him.

DeleteTo watch any one man for his mistakes for years of a blog...robs such bloggers of their life which has been replaced with an obsession. The last three Popes seem forced by media cameras to never point out the obligations of the poor. Christ cured ten lepers and said out loud that only one thanked Him..." where are the other nine?" No Pope talks that way now...the illegal immigrant is always innocent of sinful motives because media cameras have placed Popes in a Nobel Prize mode in which they must always glorify the fleeing immigrant. When I lived in southern NY state, a wife and mother near me ordered by phone a deck cleaning service to come out. A Central American illegal came out from the company and decided right then and there to rape and kill her and Police fortunately caught him that same day...drifting in that same area.

Do I ever hope to hear a Pope mention that such animals are a reality within the illegal community? No. Our Popes are posing for the media and the Nobel peace prize without being aware of it. Christ..." were not ten cured, where are the other nine?". If a Cardinal talked like that, I doubt he'd be elected by the other Cardinals. I like the last three Popes. Do I think they were honest about the poor and the murderer etc.? No.

DeleteThose gentlemen do not know much history if they think Pope Francis is the worst pope. There have been some pretty BAD popes, especially in the Dark Ages.
