My Italian friends have been asking.
Linda's cousin Sam thinks there's 'more to it!' I told them to call Lino if they didn't believe me.
I think it is what it is. The Holy Father is resigning, retiring. He explained why and I believe him and admire his courage in doing so.
I love conspiracy theories though.
Remember when there was talk of Monsignor Ganswein no longer acting as the Pope's secretary? That he would be leaving? Here's what I think about that: The Holy Father was probably looking for a good position/new job for Ganswein - to sort of set him up in a decent position after the retirement. And some little Z-cleric working in the office overheard something and speculated that Georg was leaving - never considering that it was the Pope who would be leaving!
The standard conspiracy theory seems to me to be that the Holy Father is seriously ill and doesn't want anyone to know. That seems logical. He wants to spare the Church having to watch another pope's agony. I still think it is what it is - if there was more drama, Benedict would have said so.
The Warning!
This isn't exactly a conspiracy theory, but the abrupt resignation certainly seems to put the damper on the Garabandal messages - and I expect there are other prophecies that get flushed out with this pope's resignation. Just imagine however, if the coming asteroid would trigger The Warning which would correspond with an 'event in the Church' ... the 'event' being the resignation of the pope?!!!
I know!
The two pillars.
I always thought Benedict was probably the pope of the prophecy of John Bosco as well as the pope of the Fatima Third Secret. I think I read too much into those - our own devotion and expectations always color our interpretations of such things. The Church has already interpreted the Third Secret, proving our private embellishments have little to no bearing on what may have been predicted. Then there are the prophecies of Malachy... "Predictions are subject to change" should probably be printed on all private revelation dust jackets.
Likewise, titles and legacy may be better left to history to determine. "The Pope of Christian Unity" - is one example which may have been slightly premature. Not that Pope Benedict's efforts haven't been heroic - and he certainly has accomplished much more than any other pope in that regard.
The pope won't be fleeing Rome.
I forgot which prophecy predicted that the Pope will flee Rome during the tribulation, but I propose this is why Benedict will remain at the Vatican, albeit residing in a monastery there: To squash any interpretation that he had to leave Rome ... I see it as a possible 'one-up' on that conspiracy theory. Although I seriously doubt anyone at the Vatican takes these crackpot theories into consideration.
Great expectations.
Human nature seeks stability. The resignation of a pope shakes us up. We cling to human traditions, as today's Gospel demonstrates - in this case, most of us cling to the tradition a pope is not supposed to resign. Some may even mistake it for dogma. Christ teaches us otherwise, surprising us and renewing us - even though we do not want to have our routine and preconceptions on how things should be upset or challenged. I think we like conspiracy theories because they allow us to try and make sense of the twists and turns in our belief system and institutions which we find otherwise incomprehensible.
God is good. The Holy Spirit always reminds us that our stability here on earth is in Christ and His Church.
Song choice for this post here.
What?
H/T to Mons. GG
Oh the conspiracy theories about the Pope resigning. The Poor man wears a pacemaker. If he clung to the tiara he would have been criticized ala JPII, but leave before decreptitude sets in and .........
ReplyDeleteI would prefer discussing which of the papabili is most likely to be Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman) There is Tarcisio. Pietro Bertone and Peter Kwodo Appiah( as in the Via Appia in Rome) Turkson
If you want to study conspiracy theories with the blessing of "Prophecy" come on what is better than the last Pope game! In case I am no good at this I am being very sarcastic!
I think it was my (possible) cousin, Blessed Sr. Elena, who had the vision of the Pope fleeing Rome.
ReplyDeleteHie thee to a monastery?
ReplyDeleteBlessed Sr. Elena must hae had a vision about some one else because Benedict XVI isn't leaving Rome He will stay in the vatican but move to other appartment,
ReplyDeleteOne question How will he be styled
When Celestine V resigned they called him Peter Celestine would Benedict then be syled Joseph Benedict??? and is he still His Holiness or does he go back to being a Cardinal and therefore changes his title,
Al - I do think Sr. Elena made such a prophecy - but didn't a couple of others too? Maybe Bl. Katherine Emmerich?
ReplyDeleteMaybe my idea isn't so far fetched after all - maybe they did take that into consideration. I would think the pope would want to return to Bavaria... which would be eerily similar to the pope fleeing Rome and taking refuge in Cologne!
That's it!!!! Just kidding.
Puff - I think he goes back to the title of Cardinal.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to "live in the present moment"... Away with your conspiracy theories and prophecies!!! Begone, I say! sheesh.
ReplyDeleteThe prophecies which foretell that the pope would flee Rome can't be traced back to a single reliable source. It's a particular pain for me, since being a complete geek I like to cite exact sources. The prophecies which I assume you refer to are those belonging to one "St John of the Cleft Rock" aka "Brother John of the Cleft Rock", who rather strangely has no hagiographical material at all, nada. Have a google and see. Butler's lives of the saints will be no good either. They do sound remarkably similar to Fatima though, and are styled after the "Babylonian captivity" in Avigion:
ReplyDelete"Towards the end of the world, tyrants and hostile mobs will rob the Church and the clergy of all their possessions and will afflict and martyr them. Those who heap the most abuse upon them will be held in high esteem.
At that time, the Pope with his cardinals will have to flee Rome in tragic circumstances to a place where they will be unknown. The Pope will die a cruel death in his exile. The sufferings of the Church will be much greater than at any previous time in her history. But God will raise a holy Pope, and the Angels will rejoice. Enlightened by God, this man will rebuild almost the whole world through his holiness. He will lead everyone to the true Faith."
I blame Yves Dupont and Rev. Gerald Cullerton's books by TAN, which fail to mention any sources.
The other prophecy is supposedly made by Pope St. Pius X, but good luck finding this in any reliable historical document:
“Will I be the one, or will it be a successor? What is certain is that the Pope will leave Rome and, in leaving the Vatican, he will have to pass over the dead bodies of his priests!”(Before his death) “I have seen one of my successors, of the same name, who was fleeing over the bodies of his brethren. He will take refuge in some hiding place; but after a brief respite, he will die a cruel death. Respect for God has disappeared from human hearts. They wish to efface even God’s memory. This perversity is nothing less than the beginning of the last days of the world.”
I went to some pains to try to find the origins of these prophecies, to no avail. Same goes for the ones attributed to St. Hildegard concerning the comet in Yves Dupont's book. These appear to be spurious also. I cite some authentic prophecies of St. Hildegard in my blog, which are very different in style to this spurious "comet" prophecy, which I'm sure is going to be flogged to death come December and the appearance of Ison.
Emmett - I really respect your research - thanks for contributing to the post.
ReplyDeleteThe Pope was forced to leave the Vatican. If he didn't leave voluntarily, he would have been forced out. Being forced out could have occured in various ways. The Lord was protecting him and he has been surrounded by many prayers from the faithful. Do not dismiss prophecies so quickly. Also, the pope intends to live on the Vatican grounds, perhaps he will be driven out there after he retires. Let's hope not but events are enfolding quickly and time will tell which prophecies are true.
