Because you'd never know there was a war going on.
Kind of. I'll catch morning news when I first get up, always expecting some new development, such as Putin nuked Poland or something. One day this week, they did mention the war, that Putin is upping his threats to use nukes and then they segued into news about Kim Kardashian being fined, moving onto a new Disney film and some mention of the hurricane clean-up. I don't have cable - so network news is all I get, until evening news on PBS, which includes BBC. So I pretty much depend on online news. There I can get all the versions of the stories on the war and even the 'schism' in our nation and the Church.
The division is obvious, in the US and in the Church. The more you read on the right-wingnut sites, the more you risk having your confidence eroded. I believe that is the intent. Especially with Trump/MAGA ideologues and their schismatic counterparts in Catholic antipapist circles. These folks may be more vocal on alternative social media sites, but the contaminating influence spills over into EWTN/World Over programming and other Catholic news sites, most notably The Remnant - which closely resembles the sede site, Novus Ordo Watch. It amazes me how swiftly these 'clans have united' - at least virtually - especially in their veneration of Vigano. How many traditional priests and prelates are on board with that, it's impossible to know, since conservative social media and traditionalist Catholic media is generally so unreliable, filled with hearsay and QAnon style conspiracy theories, lies and exaggerations - not forgetting dubious prophecies interpreted to make sense of our decidedly confusing times.
The thing that bothers me most is how paying attention to this stuff erodes one's confidence and creates a climate of distrust while injecting a negative-critical spirit onto even the most innocuous news stories. Sometimes I wonder if it is calculated to distract our attention from the war and the threats posed by Putin. Although, on the crockpot side of things, not a few agree with Putin's Patriarch (and many of these support Vigano) that Putin was sent by God. They even lump in the Fatima secret and additional statements by Sr. Lucia to give credence to their dire assertions of the Great Reset, Great Lie propaganda.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill said Friday that Vladimir Putin's reign over Russia had been mandated by God, congratulating the Kremlin chief on his 70th birthday. "God put you.. - Source
What is real is that a war is going on and could escalate and engulf the world in a disastrous conflagration. As the Pope and President Biden said recently.
"I deeply deplore the grave situation that has arisen in recent days, with further actions contrary to the principles of international law. It increases the risk of nuclear escalation, giving rise to fears of uncontrollable and catastrophic consequences worldwide," Pope Francis said.
“We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” Biden said at a fundraiser in New York City, citing the 1962 standoff with the Soviet Union.
Yet Christian Nationalists in the US are recruiting followers for their Army Of God - and these people believe the same stuff Putin and his Patriarch believe.
“We’re under warfare,” one speaker told them. Another said she would “take a bullet for my nation,” while a third insisted, “They hate you because they hate Jesus.” Attendees were told now is the time to “put on the whole armor of God.” Then retired three-star Army general Michael Flynn, the tour’s biggest draw, invited people to be baptized. Flynn warned the crowd that they were in the midst of a “spiritual war” and a “political war” and urged people to get involved.
Since early last year, the ReAwaken America Tour has carried its message of a country under siege to tens of thousands of people in 15 cities and towns. The tour serves as a traveling roadshow and recruiting tool for an ascendant Christian nationalist movement that’s wrapped itself in God, patriotism and politics and has grown in power and influence inside the Republican Party. - Michael Flynn's Reawaken America
It will be interesting to see how right wing Catholics incorporate with this movement, as they attempt to 'unite the clans'.

ReplyDeleteBelief is a curious phenomena. How much is choice, how much indoctrination? Putin’s war rages on while we seem oblivious to how it could expand in a flash; an atomic flash. I think some are wishing that it will hasten the end. My local Catholic radio did a fund raiser last week. “I am coming soon” was their theme. They referred to “Our Lady of the Apocalypse” a name I never heard before. You are right Terry the spill over is daily.
ReplyDeleteThere is a Virgin of the Apocalypse - it is from the Book of Revelation. The Virgin about to give birth... given wings, Her child caught up to heaven - it is a symbol of the Church and the Virgin clothed with the sun and a crown of 12 stars - the final battle with Satan. I have a great woodcarving from Quito of her - since she is their patron. I hope they aren't using the Apocalypse to fund raise.
DeleteNews to me. I feel they are doing just that. Scaring the vulnerable to give, often beyond their means, in subtle and not so subtle ways. Mother Miriam, now it Tyler Texas, tells listeners to stock up on beans & water like she is. And learn to cook without electricity. No one mentions if the end is near why give to a radio station that we won’t be able to hear anyway!
ReplyDeleteM. Miriam is a little strange. Although, with cyber hacking we could face a collapse of the grid - now more than ever. I can't stockpile anything nor will I get a gun.
DeleteAs a child I thought the same and was fearful. In 7th Grade, Sr Electa, reassured us she did not think it would be in our lifetime. This was following the Cuban Missal Crisis and we were doing the under your desk drills and crouching in the hallway. Like that would save us!
DeleteMother Miriam is interesting to me. She is so intelligent and a really good speaker. That said she goes so far out on some of her topics I cannot believe it. Many do however. She keeps changing Dioceses so something is amiss there. She truly believes we are facing Agamemnon and she is preparing. After today’s 83 middles into Ukraine she maybe right.
BREAKING: Some of the nation's largest airports have been targeted for cyberattacks by an attacker within the Russian Federation, a senior official briefed confirms to ABC News.
DeleteWe were lulled into pseudo-security after the Cold War and into the 90s. And then, when 9/11 hit, we were shocked out of our complacency and forced into world politics again. To me, it feels like that, what is going on now. We were prosperous and comfortable (at least, relatively in relation to the rest of the world), with the problems Third World countries can only dream of.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what Putin's motives are. They appear to be self-interest - to give himself more power by forcibly acquiring sovereign countries. And I certainly do not understand the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow, Kyril's, promotion of Putin, fully knowing he is decimating a Catholic/Orthodox country.
I must admit I am very glad my pastor decided to incorporate the St. Michael Prayer into the end of the Mass, before the final blessing. It is comforting to know such a powerful angel is protecting us.
Susan you are so right. I think we believed that the Fatima prophecy had been fulfilled with the downfall of the USSR. Apparently not as Russia is a bigger threat now more then ever. Putin wants to recreate the Russian Empire and will stop at nothing to do so.
DeletePatriarch Kyril is his partner. He also is ex KGB like Putin.
We still do not know the full story of Saudi Arabia’s role in 911. Their recent decrease in oil production at Putin’ behest. tells me they are fighting his war on a global scale. They are not our friends. The UK is in crisis now and it will only get worse as winter approaches. We hear nothing in our news about that. I hear from my relatives there & follow British news. Their economy is much smaller then ours & more vulnerable. They are the proverbial canary in the coal mine.
We have been saying the the St Michael’s prayer for two years now. At first I wondered why. No longer. I am afraid Fatima has not yet been fulfilled, but with the daily rosary can still be victorious.
I actually expected Armageddon most of my life - at least since 3rd or 4th grade, after my introduction to Fatima. Now that the threat is getting more serious, I keep praying as I've always tried to do. Like the Desert Fathers, I'll keep 'making baskets and praying the psalms'.
DeleteYou are doing exactly as Our Lady asked of Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, my friend. I try to do the same. The actions of others are simply out of our hands, but no one can keep us from praying and asking for intercession. I optimistically trust in God's mercy, but it seems like the world is spinning out of control a little more every day.
DeleteI edit our 2-parish newsletter and always include a quote from a saint. This month's saint quote was St Therese of Lisieux: "Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will and being just what God wants us to be." I think that is our mission.
God bless and protect you and all here!!!
Who knew? Just a four days ago I posted above about Mike Flynn's recruitment of MAGA peeps for his 'Christian Nationalist Army of God' endeavor, wondering, "It will be interesting to see how right wing Catholics incorporate with this movement, as they attempt to 'unite the clans'".

Interesting development. There is a whole cadre that includes Newt Gingrich, Steve Bannon et al. who are very much in the vanguard mustering the Catholic right. They all disavow Pope Francis and all social teachings of the Gospel message. Historically we know Franco, Mussolini, & other notorious dictators come to mind. It will be interesting what success they have.
