How to Travel to World Youth Day

Take a cappa magna ...

I think the Holy Father should consider travel alternatives for his trip to Brazil - maybe use some sort of flotation device to make the crossing.  Flying may be a bit grand.

Speaking of rock concert Catholicism...

Brazil's celebrity priest: Father Marcello Rossi.

Song for this post here.

  2. So, how long before this celebrity, rock star priest is caught in some sort of scandal? Then the only question will be whether he becomes Episcopalian and goes on the talk show circuit.

    1. There is something about him which reminds me more of former Dominican priest, Francis MacNutt who was active in the charismatic movement and got married. The Fr. Cutie thing crossed my mind as well, but Rossi is a bit more mature I think.

The Church in South America sees itself as competing with Evangelicals - what a strange concept of Christianity:

“Most of our parishes are straight out of the fourth century. The liturgical style has not changed, and the people have strayed,” Rossi says. And so he has shaken things up by introducing gospel rock, theatrical prayer sessions, and an all-out communications blitz that would impress Madison Avenue. “We cannot sit back and wait for people to come to church,” he says. “The church has to reach out and bring people back.”

Hmm...I somehow doubt this is a solid strategy for the Church's longterm success. And seriously, he thinks the liturgy is just like it was in the fourth century?? I wish him luck, of course.

  3. Very sad indeed. When I look at his photo op there is definitely one thing that does not come to mind....humility, without which there can be no holiness. Catching souls...hmm, not too likely however chances are pretty good he might catch a few flies.

  4. I'm sorry. I'm very put off by the whole "Woodstock" WYD...Pope as celebrity-star show on the road on stage happening.... It's all very NOT in the spirit of St Francis. Why not have a Youth Pilgrimage to Rome? Not to mention the lack of Christian modesty and consecrated hosts found on the ground at previous such events. I was REALLY put off that the Liturgies were changed from Latin to Portuguese just recently.

    1. I'm kind of with you on the going to Rome thing rather than flying around the world. I think the papal trips get to be a bit much. I wouldn't hold my breath for Latin from this Pope.

  5. I mean Rome is our home as Catholics.....it's traditionally been the focus of Catholic pilgrimage. A big part of our loss of identity as Catholics lies in the reality that we no longer have an authentic romanità a Roman character or quality. I just don't get the whole competing for the hearts of youth with worldly entertainers by stooping to their level almost.

Oh I'm not holding my breath for Latin from this pope however any reading of Sacrosanctum Concilium will tell us in this era of "Vatican II as Super dogma" in Cardinal Ratzinger's own words one would expect ". . .the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites." I mean if we are going to gung ho on following Vatican II...........

“The use of Latin language, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites.” (Sacrosanctum
    Concilium, n. 36)

“care must be taken to insure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the
Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n. 54)

    Pope Paul VI:
“We want to say something very plainly to those whose shallow minds or unthinking passion for the new lead them to
the idea that the Latin language must be totally spurned by the Latin Church. To them we say that it is absolutely clear
that Latin must be held in high honor…” (Address to Latinists, 1968)

  6. That is not a cappa magna-- that is a simple Cappa worn by Dominicans. That is St. Raymond of Penafort. http://dominicanfriars.org/dominican-saints-101-st-raymond-of-penafort/

    1. Haha! I know - I just like to promote the cappa magna as often as I can. Anyway, the Pope would need a larger one for his retinue. ;)

  7. They could have started earlier and gone like St lazarus, St Martha and St Mary Magdalene in a row boat with water and a sack lunch of pita bread, pomegranates and raisins.

  8. It's interesting to note that even in communist Vietnam Latin the language that has unified the Catholic faithful of a myriad of cultures and languages is given pride of place:

" The liturgy is celebrated in Latin, which emphasizes the brotherhood, even here, in the midst of such a different culture, with an indecipherable signature. The familiar Latin invites you to join in the singing loudly, to share with these people a faith that seems so honest."
