The Ugly Americans

The first family and their entourage.
.
In the 1958 novel, The Ugly American, a Burmese journalist says "For some reason, the people I meet in my country are not the same as the ones I knew in the United States. A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They're loud and ostentatious." - The Ugly American, by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer.
.
Can't say that about the Obama's, they just show up badly dressed - every where... jus' ordinary folk. They obviously do not isolate socially either - or do they? Is every State trip going to be a family affair in this Administration? No doubt dressing inappropriately is not pretentious - but is it arrogance? Could be - 'we are the first family - this is how we are'. I don't care if it's summer and really hot in Rome, a t-shirt and little shorts is pretty much street urchin dress - and who's the guy looking like a gangsta in the gym clothes? I know, probably Secret Service - it's still street life.
.
Shelley can carry all the $6000 handbags she wants - she has no class. People may think my assessment harsh or unfair, but this family is representing the American people when they go abroad. When you are working you should dress appropriately - if not modestly - even when you are 10. These trips are not State funded vacations - or are they?

  2. Oy.

Looks like her body guard, Diddy, just rolled out of bed.

  3. I just about crapped when I saw that picture earlier today. WHO is that guy????

And Shelly (I like that) has had her arms hanging out the entire time. That women is completely clueless and classless!

And don't forget the $600.00 (or is it $5900.00 ??) clutch purse.

And I agree about the whole dang family, including her MOTHER, taking all these trips that should be state trips.

It gives me a headache...I'm going to bed with my poor Elle

Are you going to have dinner with my hubby at Mancini's next week? I know, I know - you'd prefer moi but take what you can get....

Body guard? or boyfriend? Either way, guess he's using "appropriate protection"

    :-0 Did I say that?

  6. Is it really appropriate to be disparaging a child like this? I get that their whole family lacks class, but these comments are bordering on the Palin kids scandal.

On the other hand, I find it inappropriate that he's taking his entire family on these diplomatic trips.

  7. Seeker - I think we are talking about her manner of dress not her. Her parents (Mom) should be doing a better job of dressing those girls to look decent.

Both girls seem like nice little girls...

  8. Why is an eleven-year-old wearing a peace activist tee anyway? And she has two? worn on the same day? At 11, she cannot yet fully understand all of the political junk going on around her. She's a billboard for her father, and I find that pathetic.

It is WRONG for the family to be following along on this "important" summit trip. They need to be more low-key and CONSERVATIVE in dress and manner.

  9. Class (or the lack of) always shows, especially in the children who only emulate their parents.

  10. Her shirt looks like it has a big grape Kool-aid stain on it.

  12. Even the mafia believed in leaving the family out beefs. Leave the little girl alone. I don't like it when people picked on Bristol, Willow and Trig Palin so let's not do that either. Besides, she's wearing shorts and an ugly t shirt. It's not what I'd have my child wearing but it's standard dress for kids these days.

  13. OK, well call me crass but I see nothing wrong with her clothes - the neckline of the shirt is where it should be and I don't see her belly button or (presumably) her butt crack. Or are my standards just abysmally low? (hush, Terry - not a word from you about my standards!)
