I think some do. .
Years ago the KKK used to claim that kind of stuff - alleging the Pope wanted to take over the U.S. - isn't that dumb. I know! . .
All rightey then. . . . . What? . . . . . Disclaimer: No priests were harmed by this post.
In Oklahoma we Catholics had to defend our churches with guns from the KKK. They burned 3 of our churches here in the 20's and '30s and would have burned our parish church had it not been for my grandfathers and other men of the parish standing at the door with guns in their hands.
As a child I was taught that the Catholic church stored bars of gold underneath the floors of their churches, and that the KofC were the armed wing, ready to take over the world and usher in the "AntiChrist," because of course the Catholic Church was the "whore of Babylon" mentioned in John's Revelation.
We're planning to take our parochial vicar to the range in a couple of weeks for an informal "intro to firearms" course. That way he'll be ready for November, when we take the defunct Gather hymnals out in the woods.
This issue comes up in Alaska sometimes. Because so many folks carry guns, the law here like most places prohibits carrying in a church... w/o permission or something. But so many folk carry and probably dont even realize.
Our fear is more against bear than the KKK, gold seeking hooligans, or the like... but still we have issues.
when i was in the air force, i had to qualify on the 9mm. standing in this open-doored garage were me and a dozen other officers. we had to dismantle them and put them back together again before firing. it was a long time ago ('93) and i don't remember the correct names of the pieces & mechanisms, but i was standing across the table from a navigator and i wasn't holding the slide properly and the spring just SHOT it across the table at (ahem) family-jewel level. i missed him by inches and it BANGED on the outer door of the shed. he turned white as a ghost and, well, it took me forever to pass that class lol. weapons and i have never gotten along (unless my weapon of choice is funk & wagnall's). leave it to the commander's adjutant to nearly take out a nav without firing a shot.

ReplyDeleteOne of the priests at my parish disarmed a mentally ill man of his knife (which he was brandishing at said priest) once.
ReplyDeleteNo guns were involved.
(NTTAWWT. Whatever works.)
I think Father's carrying a musket. Not much firepower for home/parish defense, especially in these sad days.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it'll surely keep those sticky fingers out of the collection plate!
I posted this because I like the photo. I think a priest with a gun is just fine. As for me, it is much better that I don't own one.
ReplyDeleteAh..my infamous pistol packing padre...:)
ReplyDeleteThat is a cool photo though :)
Coassocks do quite adequately conceal ankle holsters :)

Better that you don't own one. LOL, Terry!!!
ReplyDeleteTerry# 1: we will all need guns soon to defend what is left of the Roman Catholic Church in the USA!
...very interesting post.
ReplyDeletehmmm...

Notice that he said guns, not gun but guns.
ReplyDelete"Punk, you just broke into the wrong rectory. So you have to ask yourself, do you feel blessed, punk? We do you, punk?"
And Random Friar is right. It is an 1863 Springfield replica.
