Some maxims I like.
You must be willing, for the love of God, to suffer all things, namely: labors and sorrows, temptations and vexations, anxieties, necessities, sickness, injuries, detractions, reprehensions, humiliations, confusion, correction, and contempt. - [James 1.2.] Imitation, Bk. III, Chp. 35:2
.
You will find all that in a manner lost, which you have placed in men apart from Jesus. - Imitation, Bk. II, Chp. 7:2
.
You will soon be deceived if you only regard the outward show of men. - Imitation, Bk. II, Chp. 7:3
.
"Discover not thy heart to every one." - Ecclus, VIII, 22
.
“He that flatters you more than you desire either has deceived you or wishes to deceive.” - Italian Proverb
.
John of the Cross tells us flattery and vain praise frequently involves deception and vanity, as Isaias warns: 'My people, whoever praises you deceives you.' - [Is. 3:12] - Ascent, Bk. III: 22, 2
I don't agree entirely with St.John here. Some people have been so worn down by their "so called" loved ones and by the world, that a honest well placed compliment can make a big difference in a life.

I said something kind to a woman before I headed off to a dressing room to try on clothing. When I was well hidden I heard her repeat the kind words I had said to her to two other customers.
I can either suck or I can be light. I choose light but honest light no B.S.

ReplyDeleteI guess the Italian proverb is what keeps you grounded when you get too many "You're the best, Terry!"-type comments? =P LOL!
Enbrethiliel - to be sure! LOL!
ReplyDelete"I can either suck or I can be light. I choose light but honest light no B.S." Good one, Belinda!
ReplyDeleteA kind word can set off a chain reaction; some people get precious few of them.
Terry, it's gone! The disappearing ghost post, I mean. For what it's worth, I thought it was good.
ReplyDeleteI know - I removed 2 today. Someday the entire blog will be gone. LOL!
ReplyDelete"Life is pain; anybody telling you different is trying to sell you something." Dred Pirate Roberts/Farmboy in Princess Bride(paraphrased)
ReplyDeleteI'm always surprised at how readable Imitation is, despite being written so long ago.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I have never been able to get through any of Fulton Sheen's books and he was supposed to be the "great communicator". I think I bought about five of his works and ended up donating them all to the church library.
(Well, that was off-topic. Too much cooking. Better go take a nap.)
Holy people need to stop downgrading everything some of us mere mortals try to do that is half way decent.
ReplyDeleteIt’s no wonder people aren’t Catholic. Open your mouth and you’re going to Hell.
I spoke with someone that has a restoring the family gig as a means of making a living. Every other comment was “Oh, false humility” or “deceiving flattery”. I hope I never talk to him again.
That is why I hang around sinners.
At least when you speak with the authority of the Magisterium, and from the teachings of the Traditional Catechism, they don’t go all anal retentive on you.
Compliment them and sometimes it brings them out of the depths of their despair.
There have been many times when someone has told me a kind word or compliment given them kept them from blowing their brains out, or driving their car into the path of an eighteen wheeler.
Say what you mean, and mean what you say.
Nobody ever went to Hell for saying something nice.
May God our Lord in His infinite and supreme goodness be pleased to give us His abundant grace, that we may know His most holy will, and entirely fulfill it.

Pablo is entering into the disillusionment of Mr.Terry phase and like all phases it will pass. That's what happens after you put someone on a pedestal as you think they are greater than they actually are.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's from the discovery that Terry like the rest of us are sinners, only they write things in a more pious way. When you blog with us Pablo your blogging with actual sinners - not facsimiles and if you view us as such you'll feel better about all of us. The problem is that sometimes we don't view ourselves as such. hahahaha
No one wounds as deeply as a pious christian. I've been working with my disabled disobedient daughter all day long. I know what I'm talking about.
Amen Pablo...
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how a kind word or genuine smile or simple kind gesture like holding a door open helps brighten someone's day....
I work with a bunch of sourpusses and it's amazing how the negativity rubs off on me and sours my day...
I have found what really lifts my spirits is Terry's photo of the priest with the booze and stogie...I have it on my work computer and I crack up when I see it...earlier this week one of our LAN nazis had to update some software on my computer...she saw the photo on my desktop and busted out laughing...said that was the funniest thing she saw all week...
Spread the cheer :)
God Bless everyone this Thanksgiving :) I will pray for everyone at Thanksgiving Mass in the am.. now off to make pie :)

ReplyDeleteSometimes God allows a child to test the Faith of its parents through trials.
We are fortunate to be put to the test and be given the opportunity to cry out to Heaven with purpose, rather than empty words recited by rote.
If you cannot have a conversation with the Holy Mother through the Rosary prayers, put the beads down and walk away. Better that you not pray than bother heaven with meaningless repetition.
Look at the example of the Sinner.
She loved much.
This is the best thing Christ said about anybody in His entire ministry.
She loved much.
Only a woman can love of that magnitude.
If you are a woman, stand next to the Sinner and claim your inheritance; love much.
Mrs. Belinda, you’re not fooling me. I know a good soul when I see one. …”When you blog with us Pablo your blogging with actual sinners…”
If you’re a sinner, Madam, I am the Queen of England.
And I don’t mean Elton John.

Pablo, you crack me up!

Sara, What kind of pie dear? Tell us slowly - be precise. hahaha
Ah Belinda...nothing special...just Libby's pumpkin pie recipe with the recipe off the can...I still think it makes the best pie...homemade crust though...I use the Betty Crocker recipe for pie crust but do use lard instead of shortning...to me it makes the flakiest crust.
ReplyDeleteI was going to make pumpkin pie cheesecake, but the house where I'm going said regular pumpkin pie will do....guys LUV pumpkin pie :)
In the morning I will make a pan of baked stuffing....I use the Stovetop Boxed Chicken flavor mix and doctor it up with homemade chicken stock (I make chicken stock through the year and freeze it in portions and ice cubes--that way I can control the salt and fat), and sauteeded onions, carrots, and celery.... I will also make a pot of boiled fresh cranberries, using bagged cranberries....I love fresh hot cranberries, especially over mashed potatoes...and they look so pretty in the bowl...I don't put orange in with mine and don't use alot of sugar as I prefer a bit of tart.
These are like no brainer recipes...but ones I learned growing up. The house I am going to for dinner will be about ten of us...I need to remember to bring my place setting :)
Sara
Belinda--here's another idea for you..
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I do particularly around the holidays --again something my grandma taught me--is make a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough, separate it into two pieces, roll each piece into a log, wrap each piece in wax paper and freeze. Then when someone woudl like cookies they just take the log of cookie dough out of the freezer, let it soften a bit, slice into pieces like slicing a sausage, put on a cookie sheet and bake. Great for shut-in, the elderly, sick mama with kids, etc. Include baking instructions.
I also do this ahead of time for the holidays..I make up several batches I can give them as neighbor gifts or if I need a last-minute cookie contribution for work I have dough already made up. My elderly mom thinks it's great.
