Would you be so careless?
At the conclusion of adoration last evening, I returned the monstrance to the sacristy, with the candles and the tabernacle keys, after reposing the Blessed Sacrament. I noticed a large pyx on the cluttered counter - I looked at the design wondering if the pyx was empty or not. I noticed a note to the visiting priest who had the Mass that morning. The religious who wrote the note asked Father to consecrate the low-gluten hosts contained in the pyx. I realized the Blessed Sacrament was present - and the pyx was just sitting on the counter. It should have been placed in the tabernacle for Sr. Adult Formation Director to retrieve.
Sometimes I really doubt these people believe in the real presence at all.
And we wonder why contemporary Catholics do not understand the faith, or why sacrilegious communions occur with such frequency.

We are not permitted to monkey with the Blessed Sacrament, no matter what title we bestow upon ourselves.
If you are not a Priest in the Order of Melchizedek, keep your filthy, unconsecrated hands off Christ.
The Priest is the only one, through his Priestly authority, that can bring God down from Heaven.
Not even Saint John Vianney can do this, or an angel, were they to appear.
Only a living, breathing Priest can do this. He is the only one allowed to handle the Blessed Sacrament.

The callous and careless treatment of the Lord of All, Who makes Himself so vulnerable, so present, so willing to bear the indifference and coldness of men, is just heart-breaking.
I'll include this in my hour of Adoration...
Of course it was wrong to leave the consecrated Hosts unattended, if that was what happened. Just wondering, is there any chance the note was meant for the following morning, rather than the previous one; in which case the hosts would not have been consecrated yet?

ReplyDeleteShouldn't respond to this one, but I'm going to anyway. I'm a sinner for a whole bunch of reasons. But being a woman EMHC, and receiving Communion in my hand aren't among them. In most dioceses the EMHC's are trained and mandated under the auspices of the bishop. Which means they didn't just decide to do it on their own and are duly authorized. The bishop and pastor spell out the conditions under which EMHC's are used.
As for whether one may receive Communion in the hands, it's a matter of Church discipline and custom, it has changed more than once in 2000 years according to time and place. It's the attitude of one's heart that matters.

ReplyDeleteI am also a woman EMHC..in addition to assisting the ONE youngish priest and TWO elderly deacons we have for our HUGE parish, with one Sat evening Vigil Mass and FOUR Sunday Masses, we also take communion to the shut-ins at home, the ill in hospitals, those in nursing homes, etc.
You don't like women putting our filthy grimy SINFUL hands on Our Lord, the Precious Body, the Consecrated Host?? Then step up, get the training to become an EMHC, and HELP!! Or better yet--become a priest yourself...God knows we need them... especially in our mission territory of Utah...
The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few...

Sara and MelodyK: Just for the record; I have NO problem with women bringing Holy Communion to the shut-ins...a real grace, as far as I'm concerned (and I've been duly b****-slapped on another blog for even mentioning this...too bad, get a life, is my opinion).
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the sick and home bound may receive our Lord regularly is a great thing; the irreverence and total disregard for His Sacramental Presence is another.
Melody - the next Mass would be tomorrow, Friday - so you might be right - thanks for that observation. As you know - I do jump to conclusions. I appreciate your sober commentary. Brings me much peace - thanks again.

ReplyDeleteI learned in catechism the Council of Trent took away handling of both species from the laity and made it the exclusive domain of the Priesthood... forever.
Just because something is allowed by Bishops does not necessarily make it Catholic. Some Bishops allow Freemasons into positions of authority in the Church. Is this Catholic?

You are wrong to handle the Blessed Sacrament.
If you study, you will find only one blood is to be at the Altar and the Sanctuary area (the area where women sit during the consecration). Only one blood.
Extraordinary Ministers are to be used during extraordinary times, in example, when President Kennedy had the showdown with the Russians; thousands of people went to Confession and Mass the Priests could have used them then. And they should have been only men.
The worst sin being committed today is communion in the hand, and laity handling it.
Go to confession with a traditional Priest (they apply traditional Church customs and rituals); tell him you are a Eucharistic Minister.
Please accept my apologies if my comments make me appear to be a man that believes women should be barefoot and pregnant. I also happen to believe little boys should be raised in the ways of the Lord, and not the ways of sissies, or perverts.
May God our Lord in His infinite and supreme goodness be pleased to give us His abundant grace, that we may know His most holy will, and entirely fulfill it.

Terry, like Melody I thought that perhaps the hosts hadn't been consecrated yet -- that the note was still there suggests that.

As that Voris guy said (10-10-06) it's true what a notable American bishop said about there being a serious disconnect, a failure on the part of Catholics to realize the connection between Christ and His Mystical Body on earth, the Church.
ReplyDeleteWhile this states the obvious Voris goes on to say it would be better if the Bishop explain why the disconnect exits in the first place; largely a part of the failure of the Bishops to properly instruct the laity.
I like this Voris guy more and more.
