Minnesota weather...
A return to the winter palace.
.
A week or so ago I placed my topiary outside due to our early spring. This weekend it's just too cold for them to be outdoors, and tonight we are expecting snow, so I brought the girls indoors. They are back in their winter garden - grow lights and Mylar surround them, as shown here - in the winter, Mylar and tin foil cover the base, along with the pots for optimum light reflection. I got the idea from pot growers. No - I neither grow pot or use it.
.
But since you brought it up: Would it still be a sin to smoke it if it was legal? I can never get a straight answer from anyone. Drinking is legal and it is not a sin to drink. Pain killers are legal and it is not a sin to use those as prescribed. I'm not sure I'd use it even if it was legal however - I'm just asking.
Anyway - now that the trees are indoors, I see I need to prune a bit more to get the shape just right. They have 3 siblings remaining outdoors - they happen to be more cold hardy - they being boxwood topiary.
You forgot your "Donate" button for this post.
ReplyDeleteThom you are right! Darn it. I'm going to do a post and a poll on what I should eat for supper on Sunday though - maybe I'll include it there!
ReplyDelete'Bout time you got some COLD weather..us Utahns were starting that we were the only one so blessed...
ReplyDeleteFrost on my car Thursday morning..rode my motorcycle to Sat am Mass and about froze to death...just luv it!! Still too early to put tomatoes out..
As far as pot..I think it all depends on your job...but if it's leagalized it shouldn't be a sin... maybe the old-timers know--was it a sin to drink during Prohibitian?? Since you were breaking the law I woudl think it would be a sin.. And what did the Church do concerning the sacramental wine??
You guys got me thinking too much for a Saturday morning...gotta get me some warm soup and thaw out....
Sara
Sara, I wasn't here during Prohibition, but to listen to my Grandma and other relatives talk, a lot of people ignored the law every chance they got. Especially Catholics. Probably not too many of them mentioned it in Confession. Grandma made home brew for the harvesters ("you can't expect people to come and help without offering refreshments.")
ReplyDeleteAltar wine was actually permitted under the Volstead Act. It's funny though how the demand for altar wine increased 800,000 gallons per year during that time. Especially since the priest was supposedly the only one who drank it.
Hmmm....if the sinfulness of drinking wine depends on the laws....what about Christians residing in Islamic countries who drink wine there? What about eating pork there?
ReplyDeleteI think there probably has to be something intrinsic for it to be sinful, independant upon law.
But what do I know.
Terry: What ARE you having for Sunday dinner? Hmmm?:<)!
ReplyDeleteI did like the cooking lesson...
but, well, whatever...
And FYI: Smoking is not a sin unless it is "intemperate" or in danger of your health.
ReplyDeleteCatechism of the Catholic Church.
Distributing condoms (echh!, I hate that word) or other contraceptives is a health issue;
smoking is secular "mortal sin"...not to encourage anyone here to smoke; it's nasty.
But it won't get you into "hell"...unless you smoke in order to offend God:<)!
Are your basement walls painted black? No wonder you get scared down there - alone.... in the dark.... with paint fumes under the heat lamps.... "POOF!"
ReplyDeleteFire safety is no joke Mr. Nelson...
***
Is it a sin to sniff paint fumes?
Georgette--
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in Saudi Arabia--their law of the land is also Islamic law--yes you were severely punished, Muslim or not--for drinking alcohol or eating pork...of course getting it was another matter--since it was not sold in stores you had to smuggle it in...and of course that ANOTHER law broken...
Turkey OTOH, although predomiately Muslim, is also democratic...so religious laws do not rule the country, so yes you can eat pork and drink alcohol as a Christian, just respect the dietary laws of you Muslim friends and neighbors......Turkey has some alright beer, and their own local liquor called "raki" but you would have a hard time finding bacon or pork sausage in a local grocery store or market...and no pigs on local farms..they do have wild pigs there if you feel like hunting your own...
If you wanna learn how to fast be in a Muslim country during Ramadan...
Sara
P.S. I liked the cooking lesson too...I wonder if the recipe would half well..
ReplyDeleteIn honor of Mother's Day I will have grilled salmon on the barby, with steamed asparagus, oven fried potatoes, toasted garlic bread, green salad, and cheesecake for dessert...
i don't know alot about wine so I'm going with an old stand-by--Desert Blush from Pahrump Valley Winery, a small winery in Nevada..
Cheers..Sara
P.S. Terry--me LIKE your new look :)
Terry, Dear Terry.., you a voice of sanity on this awful thing we call the internet...
ReplyDeleteDon't ever stop saying what the Lord is inspiring you to say...it is very much in need for all of us...we need to hear it!
You're not a bishop nor a priest...but you speak to us of God's Voice...in so many ways.
Thank you.
So very much!
Here is what the Catechism says:
ReplyDelete2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incure grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others' safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.
2291 The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.
and...
2289 If morality requires respect for the life of the body, it does not make it an absolute value. It rejects a neo-pagan notion that tends to promot the cult of the body, to sacrifice everything for it's sake, to idolize physical perfection and success at sports. By its selective preference of the strong over the wek, such a conception can lead to the perversion of human relationships.
bt - You get the honors for best answer - thanks for clearing this up. Also - I knew there was something wrong with working out. Kidding.
ReplyDeleteNo you may NOT smoke--it WILL damage your body--and shorten your life--and we need you around as long as possible :)
ReplyDeleteBelinda - the walls aren't blck - they are unfinished concrete - it was just dark outside the plant area.
ReplyDeleteI figured it was some sort of an artsy thing. Once I was in a black basement for about a minute. It was groovy man.
ReplyDeleteahhhhhh. ;)
