Quelle surprise! Papal resignation.

Abdication.

I just came online and, and, and,
Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI is resigning.

What a surprise.
A shock really.

See, I told you I don't read newspapers or watch TV or listen to the radio - I only found out about this as I came online late this morning.

Wow!  Popes don't do that very often.

I'm stunned.

I wonder what he will wear?
Seriously.

I'm sad now.

I love him.

Get out all your prophecy books.

Attention all mystics!
What are your voices saying?

The blogosphere has to be boiling over.

I bet he'll get a cat now.

I feel bereft...

all my prayers for the Holy Father.

First song that popped into my head...
Carry On

Part of me thinks this is a good decision. Part of me thinks he should hang in there like JPII did. But the most distressing thing is listening to the mainstream news calling for a new pope that will allow gaymarriage-femaleordination-marriedpriests blah blah blah.....
Dear Holy Spirit, please prepare the man who will become our next pope.

  2. He's always talked about it - even as Cardinal he thought he'd like to retire, but stayed on for JPII.

The speculation about a successor will get ridiculous, as will projecting a liberal new pope who will change Church teaching. That cannot and will not happen.

  3. oh Terry, I too am feeling bereft. I must remember that Pope Benedict IS brilliant - and very wise...and I do completely trust him to do this in the best way - I think he will freely share his reasoning, and I hope it goes quickly and smoothly. With him Present - maybe the process will go better, especially with all the craziness about gays/marriage/priests/et al - it Will give him even more opportunity to teach & preach. this is a stunner...

I heard it at the water cooler and didn't believe it.

Now that it seems to be true, I feel like mourning a little.

  10. I wonder what his legacy will be... The real one, not the given to him by the media. To me, he will always be The Pope of the Face of God. May God grant Him His most sublime gift in his remaining days - the gift of PEACE!

  11. You feel what you feel. But I think he made a courageous decision. He knows the Church needs a more vigorous man, and he is old, and tired. When I saw him in October, I couldn't believe how frail he was. I think he doesn't have long to live.

  12. ...well all day I have been reflecting on this: and now I wonder if we will ever know - and perhaps it Is fruitless to guess the mind of another....but having had a parent with Alzheimer's, I wonder if Pope Benedict is sensing a failure in his own "mentation" as they call it, or the onset of some dementia. Certainly it could lead to this decision. I love him and will miss him very much. A true shepard to his many black sheep.
