"You could practically write a whole book about what happened to me."

"Well it was GHASTLY! Just GHASTLY!"

  5. I don't mean too Asian in general, or too Asian for Christmas, just too Asian to be our generous host.

  7. Oh, PH!

    You're British, right?

I teach ESL to kids form all over the world. I've explained to them that the word "Asian" is used in the US to mean people from East Asia, like China, Japan, Vietnam, etc., but not for people from India and Pakistan, and even less so Iran or the Middle East.

Is it true that in the UK the term "Asian" more often than not refers to people from the Indian Subcontinent, or at least of such heritage? Like, if you read "Asian man" in the newspaper, would you be more likely to imagine that he is Korean or Pakistani?

My pet thesis is that Filipinos aren't really Asian.

For what it's worth, the captcha is "defume."

Yes dear Mercury, I am British and I love the way you think. The term Asian to us would generally refer to someone from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh.
    Blessings and prayers,
    Ann:)

  10. Enbrethiliel ... I think we still would say "Asian" for Filipinos.

  11. Enbrethiliel - I was going to say the little guy was Diego - but I knew the photo was way before his time.

Terry: The photo is closer to my time. LOL!

And we all know you chose it not for the boy but for the poodle-like dog under the tree.

Mercury: I know you foreigners don't mean anything by your useful categories (*insert affectionate wink here*) but whenever one of my US-based cousins refers to himself as an "Asian," I want to smack something with a sledgehammer. We're not "Asian" just because we live here. It's all peripheral.

  13. Anonymous - why are you afraid to identify yourself? Why not just email me about whatever issues you have with me? If you think I harrass and stalk you - why not address the problem publicly? My email is in my profile - get to it.
