Blog Wars

Guys like this stuff.
.
I know I do, it's like playing war or cowboys and Indians when I was little.  After I grew up I never got into talk radio or TV pundits.  I don't know why.  But I do come across a good fight every so often online - nothing like what goes on here on my blog however.  In fact, I just got another cancellation email because of all the negativity in my com box.  I only have like three or four commenters anyway - so my controversies are pretty tame.  I digress - but before I get back on topic, this is what my friend wrote:
.
to be honest, i've not spent a lot of time reading blogs the past few days.  i admit that i'm feeling worn out by a lot of the negativity on blogs, and there's been an exceptional amount of that on yours in the combox.  attacks & diatribes.  very little charity.  and self-righteousness dressed up as admonishing fellow brothers & sisters in Christ for their benefit.  dressing down people.  it's destroying my peace, so i'm taking some time away from the computer for a while - at least the blogs.  - Former Follower
.
What goes on here is nothing.  My blog really is namby-pamby-land.  Yet sensitive souls are offended.  If I try to tone things down, feelings get hurt.  If I let things go, feelings get hurt again.  Alas - one can't please every one.
.
Moving on.
.
So a couple of my favorite bloggers - namely Mark Shea, and the guys at Vox Nova are engaged in a small war - Thomas Peters is involved as well, but I rarely read him anymore - too politically ambitious for my taste, if you know what I mean.  But I like Mark Shea a lot - I never could understand why some of my blogger friends don't.  Likewise I really like the guys from Vox Nova.  Go figure.
.
Anyway - if you like fights, Mark Shea just posted a run-down on what is going on.  The feud kind of, sort of reminds me of what went down at The Cafeteria is Closed before that blog died.  Gerald's ship blew up real good.  (Oh dear - was that uncharitable?)

  1. I'll make the popcorn.

The American Catholic blog is getting into it too - those guys and Vox Nova put the "love thy enemies" command to the test, don't they?

I left a comment at TAC today: "What's Vox Nova?" LOL

Even the saints argued and fought amongst themselves, and yet - if by their actions some people walked away from the faith, God did not hold that against the saints, most likely because the saints sought God's forgiveness for "causing another to stumble". We do have to be careful with our tongues and our keystrokes.

To the 'former follower' - I apologize for anything I may have typed that seemed uncharitable. I sometimes let my quest for humor trample the higher goal of charity.

  2. Larry - I never heard of The American Catholic Blog - I just checked it out - thanks.

  3. The commboxes here are like a river of peace compared to Father Z's. Just saying.

  4. I'm not smart enough to figure out what all the blog wars are about...
    But 'negativity on your site?'
    Are you kidding me?
Yours is where I come to lighten up a bit...
    Your real...but humble...and seriously funny.
Not a virtue I would say is very evident on too many blogs out there today.

  5. btw..."blowed up real good."

Funny - but not uncharitable. I just started blogging when that happened, and IIRC, he did that all to himself.

I'm so happy to say that I know absolutely nothing about the latest Catholic blog war.

Still, I'll bet the Protestants are enjoying the spectacle.

  7. Terry,

I really do not like "blog wars." However, I also do not like it when people try to poison the well, or imply all kinds of false positions on others. That is what has caused this round of responses, I am afraid. And some of it continues with old, poorly made, memes. For example, the whole "Debate Club at Auschwitz" title insult for Vox Nova. To suggest it is not implying some sort of connection with Nazis is, of course, sophistry -- the title itself, of course, is aimed at making people think of the Nazis and genocide. It is, of course, a claim that there is indifference, which is also, of course, false; I think Arturo hit it on the head: if one wants to use the rhetoric, the whole blogosphere, not just one blog, can be given that title.

In reality, I think a lot of it is spiritual manipulation and control going on. That is what gets me upset. I know you know what I mean, you have read much of what I say on the matter, and agreed with it.

  8. I don't "get" blog wars. Never have, never will. Good Lord - don't these people have anything better to do?

Terry - you and Larry are my two "Catholic sites not to be missed" (FWIW)

  9. Love the picture! Reminds me of Kissinger's remark, "The reason academic quarrels are so vicious is because the stakes are so low."

  11. Haha THIS blog? Some commanders can get out of hand, but like Charlotte said, just go over to wdtprs if you wanna see rage and hostility. For the most part, the commenters here are exceptionally charitable yet fervently orthodox - which is awesome, and one of the reasons I like this place. The trick is to ignore certain things people say. Step lightly around it ...

  12. Oh, that was delicious. When he is mad, his screed gathers every asinine utterance of the insufferable fools and throws one mother load of a snowball.

    Masterful.

58 million babies are dead and the VN crowd's concern is the people who want to stop the killing would pit baby butchers out of work with their activism and they are boo hooing about being characterized as the circus clowns and magicians at the gates of the death camp?

    Cry me a river.

  13. Thomas Peters post was entitled: Why is the Catholic Left Inactive on LiveAction? I'm a bit slow and my senses have been dulled by my many years out here in Babylon, but the post seemed rhetorical.

    Kinda like:
Why did President Obama appoint a dissenting nun who helped pass Obamacare to Faith-Based Council?--"Sister" Weisenbeck Feb 2011

    or maybe:
Obama appoints another pro-abortion Catholic to top position---William Daley Jan 2011

Those smart fellows over at VN don't recognize a rhetorical sucker punch when they see it coming? Methinks they doth protest too much.

As a new "big C" Catholic, charity prevents me from goin' all Southern Baptist on the Catholic Lite?/Left?...I always get confused, which part of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church are those blogfellows?

O my Jesus, forgive me of my sins. Save me from the fires of Hell...especially the ones I seem drawn to like a moth to flame.........

  14. I don't read Shea because I don't have the time. He never says in 300 words what he can say (admittedly, quite well), in 3,000 words. And confines himself to two dozen posts a day. Where he finds the time, I don't know.

  15. Blog wars. Wasn't this a show on A&E or maybe the Discovery Channel?? Anyhoo, here in Vegas we have blog boxing, and unlike the folks involved in traditional boxing, the winner of blog boxing gets a free bowl of soup. *sigh* When are they going to start taking us seriously and realize that we bleed just like the rest?

    ;0)

  16. Seriously... everytime I am absent from blogging something like this happens...

I am reading/writing from my droid because we are house sitting a place that is sans internet.

As T-diddy would say: "I know!"

So, ill let you know the next time ill be awol, and you can prepare for blogopocalypse IIIXVLC.

  17. Dear Mr. Shea,

Please comment on the below noted article:

    http://www.catholicintl.com/articles/Answer%20to%20Shea%20on%20Jones%20book.pdf

Upon information and belief you are a disinformation tool of those who meet together against God and His Christ.

You are a harm to souls.

Facts contradict every one of your pronouncements.

Judas contemplated the thirty pieces of silver while despairing; contemplate the worth of your reward for misdirecting souls and, unlike Judas, repent.

  18. I repent nothing. Sungenis many lies and absurd anti-semitic calumnies have been well documented at the Sungenis and the Jews website (Google it). Here's a little sample of his disgusting nonsense:

Sungenis: "it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe that six million Jews were killed in Nazi internment camps." (October, 2009)

DD) Sungenis: "The documented records of the International Red Cross show that there were less than a few hundred thousand Jews who died in Nazi camps, and that most of those were from disease." (October, 2009)

(Click here to see a refutation of this claim often made by Holocaust deniers and "revisionists". According to the International Committee of the Red Cross itself, this is not what these records "show.")

EE) Sungenis: "I suggest you read the unsanitized accounts of what really happened [in the Holocaust]. When the Jews and Jewish sympathizers start showing proof that the Nazis killed 6 million Jews by gassing them, instead of jailing people for even bringing up the question, then you you can talk about Nazis and I'll listen." (Note how Sungenis here describes the "revisionist" version of the Holocaust as "unsanitized accounts of what really happened.")

GG) Sungenis: "I suggest you stop blaming it on the nation who excised [the Jews] and start looking at what the Jewish people do to get themselves excised."

HH) Sungenis: "As for Germany's relationship with the Jews, well, the Germans treated the Jews very nicely when the Jews were excised out of Russia and migrated to Germany. Then the Jews turned on the Germans because they got a better deal from someone else."

Yes. You read that last link right. The Holocaust was that reprehensible period when the Jews turned on the Germans because they got a better deal from someone else.

You and anyone who defends such murder-excusing filth are the ones who should repent.

  19. Mr. Shea,

I will move my attack to your web site.

I do like like Satan and his lackeys.

I believe my comments so far have give the vapors to the faint of heart at this blog.

  22. The statement should have read 'I do NOT like...'

I would appreciate a Mr. Nelson correction or deletion of that comment.

It is one reason we should not react in anger...

I have responded to Mr.Shea at his blog Coalition for Clarity.

  23. I think your Freudian slip says it all, pal. Coalition for Clarity is not my blog, so write what you please. I've answer you sufficiently with the quotes above. You are an apologist for a denier of mass murder. I have nothing to say to you under the "pearls before swine" principle our Lord suggests.
