Make your own Mantillas from stuff around the house!
Old fly-fishing nets from dad's closet... if he hasn't tried it first! Take the netting off the frame, run a bit of elastic around the opening, add a bit of lace tatting and voila! An unique look no one else will be wearing at donuts and coffee Sunday morning! Be creative - make it a real veil by cutting it into a v-shape - add the tatting and you are ready to Flamenco! (Add glitter for High Masses.)

ReplyDeleteYou know, someone mentioned earlier that the mantilla can have a "look at me I'm pious" sort of look, and if not all the women are wearing one, it really stands out. I think it also needlessly excites (mostly unwarranted) feelings of "oh look at her, she think she's sooo pious" among others. Of course, what people think is their own responsibility, but wearing a mantilla to an average suburban parish will often be a cause of divisiveness, even if it wasn't intended that way.
ReplyDeleteBut a scarf - for those women who feel called to cover their heads - a scarf can be easily pulled up over the head, and it doesn't seem to arouse such reactions in others. A simple hat may be nice too (which is what women mostly wore before Vatican II anyway).
I personally understand the mantilla, but I have seen it be used by people who seem to want to "show off" their piety, and I have seen it misinterpreted as saying that by others.
And I think in the past women mostly wore things they would have worn in other situations anyway.
What about cheese cloth?

ReplyDeleteMy wife always does. It is usually a hat, sometimes a scarf, but there are women in our parish who wear the mantilla and they haven't seemed to excite any negative comment.
Some cover, some don't, and most mind their own business.
As to the hairnets - well, if the lunchlady look is a big deal, I guess it would fly, but I'm pretty sure the Lord doesn't demand ugly!

ReplyDeleteI will be honest, yes mantillas are lovely but what is the point if you are COVERING head to have it show through in fancy lace or like pictured above, the mesh equivalent of fishnet stockings.
