Who, what to blame for the Haitian earthquake?

The earth just moved.
.
Tectonic plates and all of that you know.
.
Nevertheless I just read where Danny Glover is blaming Global Warming - kind of, sort of.  I think what he was really saying is the earth is angry and getting back at humanity.  That's pretty Gaia isn't it - neo-pagan I mean.
.
Of course we know Pat Robertson's take on this, joined as he is by a few Catholic fundamentalists who appear to agree with him.  One mystic is saying she's not sure if this event was mentioned in her revelations, but her voices had told her such things will take place.  Many of these same people claimed hurricane Katrina was also a punishment - New Orleans is often associated with the occult as well.
.
A month ago an even stronger quake hit Turkmenistan registering a healthy 8 on the Richter.  Loss of life and damage seems to have been kept to a minimum - and therefore it was hardly noticed by the world.  That was a big quake however.  Who was responsible for it?  Turkmenistan devils?  Or tectonic plates?
.
The point is, the human race made a pact with the devil a long time ago, and these things have been happening ever since.  But do not forget, Christ redeemed the human race.  When the tower fell in Siloam and killed several people, Our Lord pointed out to those who were playing the blame game, "Do you think they were more guilty than anyone else?  Certainly not!  But I tell you, you will all come to the same end unless you reform."
.
We are all going to die.  The important thing is that we be prepared to do so, and to act with charity towards those who suffer and die before we do.
.
Fr. Longenecker reflects on this subject as well, and points to an account in London's Daily Telegraph which includes that bit of history Pat Robertson made reference to - it helps explain the  abject poverty of the nation perhaps, but that is about it.
.
I think the best thing to do is keep your mouth shut and just pray if you can't help in any other way.

  1. For what it's worth, I think the entire earth rebels against sin, blasphemy, worship of the Evil One, and rejection of God in its many forms.
Haiti is not the only place; if that was the case, NYC and San Francisco should have dropped into the ocean by now...not not mention other places.
Yeah, folks have said the New Orleans was askin' for it and the horrible hurricane demolished it.
But we are ALL involved in this; every single one of us who sins (and that's everybody except Jesus, Mary and Joseph).
As humans, we want clear-cut explanations and rationalizations in order to make "our world" seem congruent and easy.
God's Word makes it clear. The whole creation groans in travail until the ultimate coming of the Son of God when all things will be put right.
These people are suffering such horrendous things. Better to pray, do penance, and help out as we can, as you have so wisely been counseling.

"Our Lord pointed out to those who were playing the blame game, "Do you think they were more guilty than anyone else? Certainly not! But I tell you, you will all come to the same end unless you reform."

I love THIS explanation. Prayer and penance. On the money as usual. When I was at the gym yesterday, the thought came to me: we should look for the miracles and love, rather than being transfixed by the horor, alone. On the money,as usual.

We can never try to known the mind of the Lord. God has infinite reasons for the things he allows to happen and it is not for us to know the "why's". Sometimes he allows terrible suffering to occur on people he dearly loves...we can't forget that. We only need to remember that He always will bring good out of tragedy and gives the rest of us a great chance to step up the the plate and help. When tragedy strikes it really can get humanity moving to do good for others. Just praise God in all things at all times and put trust in God's decisions.

  7. Terry: Yeah, that's kinda scary...he has some good posts; however, his "apocalyptic" scenario is not my "cuppa tea"...I'm not a skeptic; just careful!

  8. Father I read SD every day - they cover a lot. The thing about private revelations, locutions, and unapproved apparitions is that they cannot help but be added to by personal interpretations and commentary - and much is lost in casual translations.

While it is not much of a consolation, without plate tectonics and their attendant earthquakes, complex life forms would not exist on the earth. Unfortunately, the process that helps to make our environment livable, also causes a lot of death and destruction. Why this is ... God only knows.

All we can do is help, hope and pray.

    And have faith.

    Pax,
    John

  10. John: That is the mystery and "darkness" of faith while we are still here on earth.
Someday, God will make everything right.
Until then, as you so beautifully said, "All we can do is help, hope, and pray."
And that's what following our Lord Jesus Christ is all about.
    Thank you!

Disorder in the universe--we are allowed to suffer the consequences of our sins--Prayer and Penance, like nazareth priest said--that's the answer.
