Envying the dead.

Watching the news late last night I felt almost numb to the earthquake footage, as if it wasn't real, or I was watching  a documentary from long ago - maybe even old footage from Katrina, or something out of Rwanda.  It must be a coping mechanism, that sense of indifference, perhaps like the emotional detachment expected of a surgeon or an emergency room nurse - only different, because I can't do much more than watch, and pray of course.  Those of us at home can pray and contribute what we can to relief efforts - and suffer our helplessness along with the afflicted.
.
I imagine that many of the injured might well envy the dead by now.

  1. This is just an awful situation; God help the living, God be merciful to the dead!
Our compassion has to go beyond our own limited circle.
Jesus Crucified is being placed before our eyes. May we have the faith and love to recognize Him.

This has really affected me very strongly and I just don't know why. I just cry when I just think about it! And i haven't seen an inch of footage yet....I don't think I could bear it.

A friend of mine just made it back home from Haiti. He had arrived there one hour before the quake hit. He said the news is showing only 20% of what is really happening down there. The horror cannot be described. He looked shell shocked. He never thought he would have to live through an experience like that! Lets pray that we don't have to either.

  5. I cried for the Archbishop, priests and seminarians (dead or alive), especially.

Today, there was a 2nd collection, for Haiti, I gave more than I could afford.
