Humor

Or the lack of it.
.
I think I like all the people I link to in my blogroll - as well as many other bloggers I do not link to.  If you were on my blogroll and are not now, it is probably because you dropped me from your links, and so I'm just responding in kind; Thom, Mark, Cindy, and you others out there.  I still like you though.  Gosh - I've lost commenters too - I really, realy like my commenters - and the one's I've lost, I miss a lot.  One priest dropped me just because I noted that some pope used to burn faggots.  Go figure!  But that's not the point of this post.
.
Point is:  I often comment on the blogs of persons I like and leave off topic or on topic comments - some serious, but most of which are often very ROFLMAO funny - to me - albeit off the wall and inappropriate or 'dumb'.  On my planet, 'dumb' is really, really funny - like laughing Jerry's from the 20th century medieval period.  Truth be told, I have my laugh and move on - and I rarely return to see if there is a come back.  I always fail to realize many people just do not get my humor and so they sometimes take offense or think that I am an evil, nasty, man - I am - and then they get pissed - and then they drop me.  "What's in your wallet?
.
Yeah, so, my apologies for living.
.
Anaways...  People with blogs take themselves way too seriously and may not realize how nasty and negative they can be too.  I know.  They may write beautiful spiritual treatises while in the mood (love that song!), and then bash someone to hell 10 minutes later.  Some of us - few of us - admit we are rotten, envious, ass**le sinners to the core and yet we still judge who is Catholic and what level Catholic he, she, or it is:  CINO?  Fervent?  Devout?  Uber?  Ultra?  Man or beast?  We all do it - those who blog do it online - others write letters to the editor or their bishops - or me...  How'd you get my address?  Of course the "normal" people just gossip amongst themselves.  (Let me tell ya, few bloggers can be classified as "normal".)
.
Besides, as Fr. Groeschl always says, "If you ever want to be canonized - don't do a lot of writing."
.
So lighten up people - it's the holidays.  Don't pigeon hole Santa.  (No - that is not a sexual term!  You are thinking of corn.  Sheesh!)

  1. You know, Terry, you ought to checl back on comments you leave at my blog, because I almost always leave a reply comment that is way funnier than yours.

    ummm....okay, make that almost never....

Well, now that I think about, I rarely do, because I don't want you to get prideful and all that.

But if I were to do that, they would probably be funnier anyway.

    I get your humor.

  2. I get yours too - thanks - actually - you really are funnier than me. I laugh and cry about it all of the time.

Here is something I don't understand about posts of this nature, Terry. You write something like this, "Some of us - few of us - admit we are rotten, envious, ass**le sinners to the core and yet we still judge who is Catholic and what level Catholic he, she, or it is: CINO? Fervent? Devout? Uber? Ultra?" which is at least partially true, but then there are times you write in the vein of one who does think there are Catholics and then there are fake Catholics, such as this:

    http://abbey-roads.blogspot.com/2009/11/no-respecter-of-persons.html

I'm not disagreeing with what you wrote about Kennedy--at all. It's just that I sometimes get the sense your entries are "mood"-inspired and do not jive with the tone and positions you take in other entries.

    It's confusing.

I love your humor Terry :) My life had hit a very busy, stressful time and I have missed checking out your blog everyday:( But yesterday, we received good news from my grandson Philip's doctors--and I'm getting some of MY life back--that means I can blog more! So expect more comments from me: the "rotten, envious, ass**le sinner to the core" that loves your blog.

  6. There are people who live in a box, people who live outside of a box, and the third type (my favorite)- people who don't even have a box.

You don't have a box and I am so grateful!

  7. Publishing private emails without context or permission could potentially drive away commenters. It's a novel idea, I'm sure.

It is good to be liked, however, as I'm sure it makes you feel very warm inside, which should come in handy this winter, as it looks to be a long one.

Your post just got another comment!

Guilty I am. Criticism accepted. I have to admit that I sometimes fail to recognize the impact of the written word.

"[F]ew bloggers can be classified as "normal"

Do you really think that the "normal" ones are actually normal? It's the "normal" ones I don't read. You know that there is something much more deviant and pathological about underlying blogs.

  11. Dear all -

Seriously, I have been very tempted to stop subscribing to this blog. The last straw was _some_ of the comments on http://abbey-roads.blogspot.com/2009/11/climate-change-and-going-green.html.
Look, the Summit on Climate Change is going on in Copenhagen and is not very promising, and it is December and I am still wearing just a polo shirt - which is not normal in this part of the world, and I just don't think climate change is an issue to be made fun of. I am disappointed. We know what is going to happen if the liberals make fun of abortion issue.
I know I sound like a raving liberal. Maybe I am? I always present myself as what I am not. Liberals find me too conservative and conservatives find me too liberal.
There are many issues and world problems and we can't tackle them all. But if someone likes to take them on, let them! We don't have to agree at all but at least give them the space?
I really appreciate the humour of Terry and his artwork and artistic flair (the choice of photos and taglines) (that's why I still subscribe) but I have a hunch that this blog is sadly turning into an anti-liberal glee club.

  12. Brother William - perhaps you haven't heard of Climategate.

Terry - Now I feel even worse that you feel bad.

  13. Oh Brother William - then why didn't you say so? You can protest my posts any time you like.
    .
Hey man. Why aren't you wearing your habit - a polo? Is it Ralph Lauren? I bet it's grape colour. Kidding - now lighten up.

BTW - I so agree that we have to stop wasting energy, recycle, develop better fuels, etc. - but honestly - this whole climate thing is so much bigger - and it is entirely Providential. Weather - climate - it happens - it evolves.

Consider this - what if "the stones are crying out"? What if nature is crying out because of the sins of humanity - not eco-sins - but the sins against nature - sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance. Money and politics and totalitarian legislation cannot do away with that now can it.

  18. Dear Terry

    1. The polo shirt I wear is BROWN in colour. Not Ralph Lauren but some cheap Made-in-China stuff.

    2. (Are you ready for this?) The brown polo shirt happens to be made by the Secular Franciscans for JPIC purposes (code name for Climategate) with matching eco-shopping bags with an icon of St Francis talking to Brother Wolf.

    3. I normally do not wear my habit when I am in my room but now that you have mentioned it, I will put it on (with my pants too).

    4. Next time at confession, I will mention that I have taken myself and everyone else just too seriously.

  26. Climategate? Ha! Listen to what the Papa is saying now!
    http://www.zenit.org/article-27852?l=english

Papal Message for World Peace Day

"If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation"!!! Although St Francis was not mentioned, it is so blatantly clear that even our beloved Pope is so Franciscan at heart. (His dissertation was on Bonaventure for sure.)

But I am not happy - even the Pope himself has spoken. Why didn't he say it a wee bit earlier, say at the beginning of the Summit? If so, Copenhagen Summit may have a different outcome (and I won't feel so dumb about all this climategate accusation)...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh Br. William, didn't you know we can't listen to the Holy Father unless we already agree?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes.

'Supposing the Pope looked up and saw a cloud and said "It's going to rain," would that be bound to happen?' 'Oh, yes, Father.' 'But supposing it didn't?' He thought a moment and said, 'I suppose it would be sort of raining spiritually, only we were too sinful to see it.' - Brideshead

  29. Right! We Franciscan friars are world renowned to have the least intellectual curiosity or natural piety -- (Seculars are another story....)
